I agree with everything you've said here except I don't think Gwyneth Paltrow is a good person. I think whether she's peddling this bs on completely on purpose or somewhat unknowingly she's still responsible. Goop is her creation and for her to even endorse the ridiculous claims of depression stickers or the outrageous prices of most all of these products and retreats imo makes her either ignorant and harmful. She knows the cult like following of Goop so for me I'd never be able to talk with her without calling her out for allowing so much to so many people. Thanks for sharing this eye opening information. Much appreciated.

He's innocent because he's rich and famous?! No, that's not how we should think, about him, Gwyneth or any other celebrity! And I agree, I can't imagine Gwyneth doesn't honestly know she's making bank on this garbage and that it's not true, even though she once said along the lines of "nothing in nature can be harmful." If she earnestly believes all this, then she's incredibly stupid and then she's equally wrong for pushing this.

I would highly recommend that people do more research about Jonestown. Most of those people who followed Jim Jones were poor (many of them black) and were forced to move to Jonestown and "drink the koolaid." Jim Jones had an armed militia behind him and would have people killed if they tried to leave. I think about a third of the victims iirc were children who couldn't consent and many of the rest were forced to drink the po*son (or were injected with it) at gunpoint. Jonestown itself was an armed compound that was very hard to escape. It really makes me feel bad for the victims when people act as though it was just a bunch of crazy people who k*lled themselves. Even many of the survivors take issues with the phrase "drinking the koolaid." Not trying to be mean or anything, just want to spread awareness about a tragedy that is very misunderstood.

I feel like addressing the fact that the victims of the Jonestown massacre did not, as a whole, commit mass suicide, very few were true zealots ready to die for an abusive leader that had defectors beaten through the history of his commune, and the majority were forced to drink the cyanide/tranquilizer at gunpoint, including nearly three-hundred children. That's clearly one of the most extreme and tragic examples of a cult, but that's what's so despicable about false promises: Desperation makes people extremely vulnerable, and whether a vulnerable person was manipulated into giving all their worldly possessions to a cult, or fooled into buying a placebo for a fortune, it always ends with the hurting people's increased suffering for another's greed.

As an expert in the fields of economics and marketing let me assure you that Cassandra has perfectly broken down the similarities between marketing tactics and cults. You don´t have to have a Master in economics and marketing to be able to analyse the similarities. All you need is a brain, a sufficient amount of intelligence, the ability to research and comprehend plus the ability of putting all the peaces together = joinded-up thinking. A great example of a cult brand created by excellent marketing is Apple. Apple is not only a brand. Apple is a cult with a huge following and a cult leader who will never be forgotten: Steve Jobs. He also was the marketing genius behind the scenes who created the cult brand. Apart from the technological aspects of Apple products there are three main factors which contributed to Apple´s success: 1) A fantastic product design 2) An "Us against Them " marketing strategy which tells Apple buyers that they are inferior to the buyers of other brands 3) A charismatic (cult) brand leader. Although Jobs isn´t present anymore Apple´s success is still based on the brand reputation the charismatic Steve Jobs created: Jobs managed to turn Apple customers into legions of fanatical brand evangelists which now do most of the Marketing work for Apple by recruiting new cult followers through word-of-mouth recommendation. I personally cannot stand Apple and its fanatical brainwashed followers but Steve Jobs was a Sales and Marketing genius!

That’s not quite true. She’s won an Oscar (while Shakespeare in Love may not have deserved Best Picture that year, she did a good job as lead actress), she’s been in multiple very well received movies like Sliding Doors, Se7en, Contagion, Emma, Great Expectations, The Royal Tenenbaums, and many, many more. She’s had a very long and very successful career as an actress, she’s been acting for about 30 years now. And sure, there’s definitely a bit of nepotism there, there’s a lot of that in Hollywood (her mother is Blythe Danner, a well respected actress, and her father Bruce Paltrow is a director). Still, she’s had a long and pretty distinguished career, and the Marvel movies are the least of it. Nah, she’s an awful person, and Goop is dangerous pseudoscience, but to say she has one known movie, or that she isn’t respected as an actress, it isn’t true at all. And unlike Gwyneth, we don’t need to say untrue things to make a point.

I was a Jehovah’s Witness and since my husband and I left we are shunned by our families and former friends. Our lives ticked the boxes of cult control. When I talk to others who grew up in more “mainstream religions” there are a lot of those same elements of control. Just because a religious group has a large size and cultural acceptance does not make it any less dangerous. If you were raised Catholic or Muslim you could have very well had a worse experience than me even though my experience would be more readily accepted as cult indoctrination. High control group is probably a better way to describe cults because cults love to use strict definitions of cults to their advantage and say “See? We’re not a cult because x,y,z.” All the while getting a tighter grip on you. JWs did this all the time. The BITE Model is a good place to start if you want to examine your particular group. You could very well be in a high control group even if you are convinced you are not. It’s indoctrination baby. Stay careful everyone.

Specifically the problem with speaking up about something or leaving the religion and getting shunned, losing friends and family, all that. 16:00 So, not sure why I'm defending this, but whatever. CBT is an established form of talk therapy that helps patients deconstruct unwanted or intrusive thought patterns (social anxiety is a good example here, but it's also used for depression). So, if you have insomnia because you're anxious or depressed, like, yeah CBT might be really helpful. CBT is neither new-age nor "non-Western medicine," so she's marketing it as something it's not specifically intended for which makes it seem like freshly unearthed knowledge. What's really gross is that she's charging so much when most therapists and counselors are familiar with this branch of therapy, and many can administer it through insurance, at a lower rate, or for free (like some psychiatric hospitals do). Anyway, GP's a grifter.

Everything is a cult as long as people agree on a concept. There's a difference between people not being able to think for themselves and being able to. No one's a victim to anything as no one is forcing anyone or can force soemone to think soenway

I always wondered if there were people who actually bought Goop products. They seem like a waste of money. I thought Goop was kind of a pet project of Gwyneth Paltrow that didn't make any money. I guess I'm wrong and it makes me sad that people fall for the lies they tell.

One of the things people fundamentally misunderstand about cults is that they Target people who are gullible or unintelligent. In reality, cults tend to go after people who are intelligent and who appear successful. Cults' viability depends not only on the charisma of the leader(s), but on the charisma of the followers. If I go to a gathering and all the people seem brainwashed, why would I trust the leader? But if the followers seem rational, intelligent, and successful, and they believe in the leader, why wouldn't I?

When it comes to goop, and even with a lot of cults- I always see people pushing this idea that “wow that’s so stupid who would fall for that?” Which to some extent is a victim blaming mindset. I think in some cases it is a “rich person does things like this in order to set them apart from poor people” kinda club, elitism will always be a part of our world and culture. In other cases, I think it is important for able-bodied people to remember there are people in this world suffering with chronic health condition everyday- and they are super vulnerable to things like this. When you suffer everyday, its only natural to get desperate at times for a way out- and scam artist are notorious for taking advantage of vulnerable people. Please, try to remember that when you call the people who fall into these trappings stupid or weak minded. You just maybe a person who hasn’t been in that desperate of a mindset, and that is something you should be grateful for.

Loved the video but I hate when people talk so comprehensive about Gweneth Paltrow businesses like “she is a great person besides that”… NO… Black people are afraid even of the police because of our racist society and Gweneth gets to have ridiculous opportunities and empathy from public opinion even tho she haves the money and means to educate herself… This isn’t ok…

Yeah, she seems nice, but most cult leaders seem nice and charming in the surface, otherwise nobody would follow them. She’s preying on sick people desperate for a cure. Cassandra avoids Sunday Riley when they've done a lot less shit that Gwyneth Paltrow. Sure, her writers are doing the writing, but she absolutely knows what kind of website she’s running. She knows about the lawsuits. She’s not a clueless figurehead for a big corporation, she creeated that corporation that actively harms people by recommending and selling unsafe practises.

Everything else aside there’s nothing wrong with EWG and being conscious of what’s in products you use. If you were a mom you might feel differently about what you use on your children. I’m not a fan of fragrance or aluminum and I gave up that kind of deodorant a long time ago. And neither goop or EWG told me to.

Thanks a lot for this video and your insight. And you are so respectful. I myself don't like Goop and Gwyneth Paltrow as the 'Guru'. She makes money 💸 of people who think they can be just like her. And so many others do the same. In a way it's capitalism mixed with cult and mind control. My humble opinion xxx

Just because you found benefits in something, doesn’t make it legitimate. That is the literal purpose of Cassandra’s video. You found it therapeutic because your brain was convinced it was. It is dangerous, which is why it is illegal in 49 states. You drank Gwyneth’s kool-aid.

I’m not saying Gwyneth Paltrow is a bad person but if enough people sue the company Goop then I think the company will take a downfall and it’s not like she doesn’t have an amazing acting career in herself but just leave the skin care and the Cult pseudoscience alone.

Is there any point at which the public/customer should also be held accountable? People just blindly falling and paying for everything they see without doing any research of their own? Considering that these days information is on our fingerptips, we cannot just make our own stupid VOLUNTARY decisions and then blame the business for taking advantage of us.
