MAUSOLEUM
Anıtkabir is the mausoleum of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the leader of the Turkish War of Independence and its reforms, and the first President of the Republic of Turkey, located in Ankara Anıttepe (formerly Rasattepe). In addition, the fourth President, Cemal Gürsel, was buried in the section of martyrs of the revolution in 1966 (according to the State Cemetery Law dated November 6, 1981, article 1, paragraph 2, it was issued on August 27, 1988). Since 1973, the tomb of İsmet İnönü has also been in Anıtkabir.
Rasattepe (Anıttepe) Before the Anıtkabir was built, the name of Anıttepe was Rasattepe because there was an observation station. On this hill with an altitude of 906, BC. There were tumuli (tomb structures) belonging to the Phrygian civilization, which established a state in Anatolia in the 12th century. After it was decided to build Anıtkabir in Rasattepe, archaeological excavations were carried out to remove these tumuli. The artifacts unearthed from these tumuli are exhibited in the Museum of Anatolian Civilizations.
After the determination of the Anıtkabir project, expropriation works were carried out in the first stage and construction started on October 9, 1944. The construction of Anıtkabir was completed in 1953 in 4 phases over a period of 9 years.
