Oh Oh - My ancient Prussian roots are sprouting listening to this. Such beautiful music and so eloquently played. I can only hope it is never again needed in a field of battle but only relegated to fond memories of loved ones lost in times of war. And let us rejoice in our ability to bring forth peaceful times ahead. It is so much better.

Wow. I'm Scottish, from dumfries. I remember being told as a boy that Robert Burns, our national poet took a tune that was supposed to have been played at the Battle of Bannockburn, and used the words that King Robert the Bruce reportedly said to encourage his troops before battle, and used them for one of Scotland's most patriotic hymns "Scots Wha Hae". "Tyrants fall in every foe." Lest we forget.
@allenjenkins794711 ай бұрын
Said to be the same tune played by the Franco-Scots army in front of Jeanne d'Arc at the siege of Orleans in 1429. Much like Shakespeare's "Band of brothers" speech from Henry V, an idealised version of what may have been said in order to raise patriotic fervour in later generations
@jeanpierrechoisy64748 ай бұрын
When Joan of Arc entered Orléans in 1429 her troops included a contingent of Scots who performed this march. Very subjective but I always felt this melody as both very Scottish and undated: as much from 1314 as from the 21st century. It is sometimes said that it is by being the most ourselves that we are the most universal. Would this be an example?
@thomasgeddes48178 ай бұрын
@jeanpierrechoisy6474 I take this as a direct question, but have no immediate answer. For me "Freedom" is something I take for granted, unless it is challenged, in which case it is most definitely worth defending. Fortunately I live in a country which has never lost its freedom since 1314, and would like to keep it that way. Long live liberty. Those who have lived without, or who are fighting for their own now will know exactly what I'm talking about. Greetings from Scotland
@jeanpierrechoisy64748 ай бұрын
@@thomasgeddes4817 I leave the theme of music but not that of Scotland. More than 20 years ago I spent 5 weeks in Scotland focusing on wildlife with my eldest son, then finishing secondary school. More recently I spent 16 days there with my daughter and my second son, invited by a couple very concerned by the reintroduction of the Beaver in Scotland and who had made two field information trips to my home, in the southern French Pre-Alps. Besides the wildlife, it is one of the parts of the world where I have stayed whose landscapes impressed me the most. Although as an inhabitant of the Alps, I have no reason to complain from this point of view. We could be less enthusiastic about the climate, many French people would say. But not me: during each of my two stays, I enjoyed an exceptional summer with good weather. During my stay with my eldest son an old lady said to us: “You brought good weather: come back! come back!”

Traditional in the French Armies since 1429, when it was played by the Scottish troops at the siege of Orleans. A Scottish contingent was fighting the English troops with the French since 1420... Probably the oldest military march still played regularly.

I recall marching in a NATO change of command ceremony with a Bundeswehr band. I was in HQ Battery of Pershing Missile unit. We were not a parade unit, definitely a field unit, but they tasked us for some troops to march. It was the only time I wore Class A uniform, except when flying back to the states for discharge. While waiting to form up, we were next to the bus with the Bundeswehr band. They were slouched in their seats, with disheveled uniforms, looking very unsoldierly. About five minutes before show time, they put on their jackets and ties, limbered up their instruments, fell out, and formed up into the most professional looking and sounding unit there. Very impressive. I recall next to nothing else about the ceremony except that we marched well enough not to be arrested or court-martialed.
