Thank you for posting these. My husband and I went to Ireland in 2009. We rented a car, and spent 10 days exploring this beautiful land. We covered quite a bit of it, and enjoyed getting lost as much as we enjoyed visiting important locations. After we left Dublin, Clonmacnoise was our first stop. It was drizzling, but was such an amazing spot. In fact, even though we saw so much on our trip, I always have some of my fondest memories here, looking out at the River Shannon, envisioning the monks walking north along the river, perhaps towards Athlone (not sure if Athlone existed then). We put a lot of money aside for our visit, but had decided to stop here last minute, while on our way to Connemara and Letterfrack. So we didn’t pay for a guided tour, or visit inside the museum. To this day, this location remains one of my absolute favorites. The history was truly palpable. If I get back again, I will definitely do the full experience.
