Sooo... Ummm... You know you could have just swapped the drive wheel & mounting plate to the other side, right? That's assuming, of course, that the seat wouldn't be in the way.

@@ianbuilder You can really go as large as you want. There's a guy who used a cheap 212cc (or so) engine on his antique tractor, with relatively decent results. External commutation of BLDC motors is possible, should you choose to go that route. Its not the easiest thing to figure out on induction motors, but it is pretty cost effective if you have some scrap motors laying around. Old drills are the easiest to use, since you can just put the timing gear in the chuck. It takes one motor to control one phase, so it takes 3 to control the typical BLDC motor. Its also possible to rewire most multi phase induction motors to single phase at a significant loss of torque. A 10Kw motor for that size of kart may be a candidate. EDIT: You could also use a controller meant for a much smaller motor to drive some field effect transistors, which would drive the larger motor directly.
