I didn’t believe him until he showed me the boots he’d worn and they were covered in small fang marks. And just to add to the story, Gall’s catalog had sent him the wrong boots he’d ordered for work. They sent him snake bite proof boots by mistake. He didn’t want to go through the hassle of sending them back and kept them for hiking. The boots saved his life.

I remember I was a kid maybe 8-9 years old and one day I, my dad and another friend were visiting Sofia zoo in Bulgaria. Now the Sofia zoo had recently reserved rattlesnakes and we went to see them. So here I am standing in front of the rattlesnake display and the snake is chilling next to the glass. Then my genius 8 years old brain decides it will be awesome if I annoy the reptile. So naturally the maraca start to sound but I still don't stop. What followed was a strike that was stoped by the glass and me jumping back. The whole strike was lightening fast maybe few seconds. Needless to say I learn my lesson never to annoy an animal( any animal) and the experience frightened so much my dad that I was grounded and forbidden to stay out of the reptile house the following 3-4 visits ( and I loved the reptile house as it was the most interesting place to me)

Hunter Allen I don't know what kinda rattle snakes these were but if they are like the diamondback rattle snakes and others around me... they have a single mate for the female but 2+ males for one female leads to fights. You would have seen them rising to to size the other, a kinda dancing motion, then headbutts (since the snakes know if they bite they would kill each other with venom). But other snakes mate in masses like this but you would see 30+ snakes kinda staking on the females.

Rattlesnakes only strike when they absolutely need to. If they aren't hunting, then it's to protect themselves. But even then, biting is their last resort; That venom can't just be wasted, that's their survival tool. Likely, those three that struck saw the drone as a threat, and when their rattling didn't scare it off, they switched to their last resort.

Might have been a dry bite too, since as you said their venom is valuable I kinda think this shows just how far a rattler will go to avoid biting. From what I've heard people who get bit by them either catch them completely off guard or are being stupid and antagonizing them.
