For other professionals watching this review.. Overall this review is spot on comparing 360 cameras for performance but a few corrections to some of his complaints: 1. h264 has a resolution limit of 4096 × 2048. which is why it doesn't support the 5k resolution and you should be using a 422 codec anyway. 2. File sizes.. It's a 5k 360 camera in a 422 codec. Of course the files are massive. 3. Using an iPhone6 from 2014 should be a struggle at best... Even the 6s was 70% faster with the A9 chip.. Not sure on the Android side. 4. Playback DOES work.. This one is about hardware. For clean playback you should have a 4core processor, 16GB of ram as well as a dedicated graphics card.. You should also be working from an internal SSD not an HDD or from an external HDD for proper playback. The bit rate of 5K is high with 422 footage. We're not talking 422 at 1920x1080. 5. Of course you should be downloading the software and plugins to manage your footage from high end codec specific tech... Pro Editing 101. 6. Finally.. The timer thing is just silly to me.. It has timelapse built in. Set it to 5, 10 or 30 seconds and take a few photos in different poses.. You're bound to get a great one. Pretty much everything including the stitching lines, general performance and footage/audio quality etc is spot on.. Sorry for the critique and once again, great review. Just a few minor corrections on some of his feedback. Either way.. Great work 360 guy.

I thought itd be cool to post a video of the whole trip on facebook and people be able to use their phone to look around the enviroment in the shots.. What do you think?

You can shoot in 3k or shoot 5k and bring it down to 3k in the exporting process.. Unfortunately this fusion footage just takes a long time to stitch before you can really dive into the editing process. I was using a 2015 maxed out MBP a month ago and I just purchased the 2018 with 32gb of ram i7 6-core. I can tell you that this new machine has saved me likely 20+ hours of encoding time because of the faster system. I've been working on and off of an edit for a tubing and canoeing trip I went on in July. Personal feedback on shooting is the 360 effect is cool to look around but it's hard to make it practical. Like any good video production you need a process for develop content. If you want to share your experience I'd say storyboard a baseline narrative of what you want to show and shoot it with a regular gopro. While I like the process of not having to point the camera as much its still a VERY STEEP learning curve to edit the GoPro fusion footage. I'm not sure when your trip is but you're going to want to really spend some time shooting test and getting familiar with how to shoot with the fusion. It's cool in the idea it shoots 360 but it's not a typical point and shoot and you automatically have content. It takes some understanding on how it creates stitch lines and how close up you want your content.. etc.. Personally since its your honeymoon i'd suggest storyboarding and shooting a few things with intention for a solid edit. If you want to get into the weeds and really dive into how to produce with the Fusion... Get it and SHOOT A TON of test footage. I'll post a link to the video I complete once its done. I've had the Hero3Black and Hero4Black and love them both. This fusion is great but just like shooting with a drone.. it takes a ton of practice and intention. Hope that helps a bit.

You can actually render out H264 at higher than 4k. I've done 7680 wide before. A bunch of encoders want to limit to 4096 but encoders such as FFMPEG will easily render out 7680. Not sure what the camera itself is actually doing internally.

I really enjoyed this HONEST review. I started with an LG (lost it in a taxi) moved to Samsung Gear 360 (2017) great app but disappointing video then moved to a MiSphere 360 due to some reviews i watched. The MiSphere has/is giving me headaches with the app and the phone (coincidentally also a Samsung Galaxy S8) and the desktop software is disappointing to say the least. I was looking at upgrading to a Fusion, but thinking I need to do a lot more research. So often the Hardware is great and the Software substandard...... I've seen some great output from the Fusion but without a detailed explanation of the process to get it there.... Thanks again

So, crazy question... I use gopros for scanning chimneys and currently have an OLD af gopro 3. I was thinking that the Fusion would be awesome to have as to not need to turn the camera inside of the chimney. I've been able to successfully get the gopro 3 to keep connectivity by attaching a coaxial cable near the camera and then run it through the chimney with the phone in front of me... but is it really that hard to scan through the video? I literally just use the video as to take screen shots of bad areas. I'm wondering if I should pass or go for the Max or stick with what I'm currently using. There are chimney video cameras and they want like $3k to $5k and aren't as good as my million year old gopro 3 that I got for like $100 bucks with lots of attachments.

Good review. I find it works fine with my iPhone7 but has taken a couple of updates to get there. Timer is annoying but you can trigger by voice command of course, however I just use the standard GoPro remote which works fine and is probably better than a timer. Annoying part is the Codecs, only the H.264 one works for me, did you upload Codecs?

thank you very much! Very informative. Also the hero 5 had problems with connecting to the app. I got the Yi-360 using adobe premiere pro cc I can do overcapture. The app of the Yi-360 is really great. It instantly connects and while I shoot even if I'm far away it shows me the footage without any delays and hickups. But even shooting 5.7K and using best option for stitching, when I then use the gopro overcapture plugin, the video quality of it doesn't look to me that great. Bit unsharp and mushy. So can I ask you for your opinion how you would judge the difference in video quality between the gopro fusion and the YI 360? And maybe you have a comparison video on this topic? Certain Codecs of higher-res video footage can't be processed into lower formats, like H.264...as you mentioned, the bitrate is a bit higher than other cameras in the field, so you can't put it into the standard format...what's wrong with the other formats?

I think, considering the original (2016) Gear 360 is still relevant, shoots 4k, and only costs $60, the nearly $800 price tag on the Fusion 360 is quite ridiculous. I know its really good and shoots 5k and all but I still think right now its not the best investment.

Still pretty disappointed that it doesn’t have the most basic of camera function. MANUAL EXPOSURE/EV LOCK and WB. The fact that it can auto change WB and exposure while in a shot makes footage very amateurish on occasion. Come on GoPro give us the settings that camera phones gave us well over a decade ago!
