As a professional photographer I find the new stabilization the main reason for, and well worth, the upgrade. Tested 2,7 K in linear “mode” just with the Hero 8 handheld (small hand grip) and find it almost equal to my gimbals kzbin.info/www/bejne/f37Xk4OvZZV6hMk .

Great video, probably one of the best I have seen. Lots of useful knowledge. Please try to speak a bit slower and not in fast bursts. I am non native English speaking. You really helped me to decide whether to upgrade or not. I will wait for two reasons. 1.The non replaceable lens. I ride dirt bikes and this is really a deal breaker for me. 2. The “old chip”. The sw upgrades should be available on older models as they hw is the same. I reckon a new chip will come on the GoPro 9.
@TheTechnologyMan5 жыл бұрын
I reckon the next version will have a new processor too - we'll have to wait and see. The non-replaceable lens is a frustration I agree. I have put a protector on it now. You could use the external housing if you're not too concerned with the audio quality? I will try and speak slower but I want to get a through a lot of information and yet keep the videos a decent length. But you can slow the video down and I have verbose captions for every video I publish which should definitely help if English is not your first language.

Thank you Technology Man. I am struggling with budget shuffling and gear selection. I recently retired and am now planning on extensive travel. Three years ago I purchased camera technology to learn about and use on my journey; however, as you know, tech advancements make upgrades a consideration. I purchased a GoPro Hero 5 Black, a DJI Mavic Pro with goggles, and a Sony A6500 with Lenses and then later an iPhone X. I got several accessories and spent a lot of money. Now, three years later, I am a novice still with all of it though I have covered the bases. At this point, I am not sure what is overlapping tech or how to limit more spending. I have used them all but I cannot continue to upgrade them all either. I see quite a difference in the Hero 5 to the newer choices and my purpose for getting the action cam was for on-the-move shooting. I can do that with the Sony and phone too but...more limits. Any thoughts? I camp and see exhibits, go underwater, just document my adventures.

Out of all that kit - I'd say only the GoPro will offer a really noticeable improvement - if budget allows. The IS is so much better.

if you use your devices carefully, don't jump off feces or fall off skis, the sony FDR x3000 is the best choice for you. She shoots at dusk better, the sound recording is excellent. Its disadvantages are the fear of moisture and bumps, but it is still incredibly cool. I suggest you take a closer look at it. Goupro 8 for action. Sony for quiet tourism. I've been using the SanDisk 128GB Ultra Plus on both my Hero 4 & Hero 5 at 4.7K 60fps with no recording errors & write speed to my WD 1TB Internal drives at 19MB/s. Proxy Editing on Adobe Premier 2022 then Export at 4K .H264. It took me much trial & error to achieve these settings! On another note I find that the white balance setting in these cameras nowadays is so accurate that's the only automatic setting that I use everything else is manual limiting my ISO to 400 and setting the audio on stereo or Sometimes using an external wireless mic and the picture size at the narrow setting!

Have been using a Garmin VIRB Ultra 30 but just bought this GoPro which has just come so this video was timely as not used it yet. I wanted a camera with better stabilisation when running. Hope this will be somewhat better than the Garmin one.
@TheTechnologyMan5 жыл бұрын
Hi Tim. I've not tried the Garmin, but I think you'll be impressed. I got lots of running footage that I didn't include - but in decent light the camera does an amazing job. Stick with a resolution mode that support Hypersmooth 2.0 "High" mode - otherwise you drop to Hero 7 IS - which is still decent but not as good. Let me know how you find it!
@TimGrose5 жыл бұрын
The Technology Man thanks for tip about Hypersmooth. What resolution and FPS might work best for KZbin when running do you think? Is 4K 60 overkill? I think I was using 2.7K 30 on the Garmin as it does offer some stabilisation at that setting.
@TheTechnologyMan5 жыл бұрын
I use 2.7k 50fps - since you still get Hypersmooth 2.0 (or Boost) and can slow down a bit if you want. I want the smoothest video possible. If you up resolution or framerate from this, you lose some IS. It's a trade off!

Great video, but can you answer this for me. I know the 8 is supposed to be a bit slimmer, so it won't fit into any of the 'cages' that are necessary for mounting the 5. But...how much does it really not fit? Is it just a little loose in one dimension or is it just absolutely not going to work in any way shape or form? I just think it might be convenient if you could slip the 8 into a particular mounted setup you have for the 5 utilizing the 5's cage (since things might be attached to it).

Hero 7 audio is better than hero 8 is it true?
@TheTechnologyMan4 жыл бұрын
I don't have the Hero 7 to test against sorry.

Why not just use a 5 with a gimbal? Won't that still be far smoother than an 8 without one? And less expensive than buying an 8.
@TheTechnologyMan5 жыл бұрын
Yes you could and in some situations the gimbal will still be better. But it's pretty impressive what the Hero 8 does without the extra bulk and inconvenience of a gimbal ...

I’m still using an old Hero 4 I got back in 2015 or something. Guess I need a new one😂

That's still a decent camera!

Thanks Ron Ota! You can always enable captions (for a verbose transcript) if you find I'm speaking too quickly - and I have a written review at thetechnologyman.com if you prefer that. I don't want my videos too long and I like to cover as much information as possible - bit I will definitely take note of your feedback - thanks!

On the Hero 8, the default color is over-saturated and the default lens is a fish eye. This is where we are in our culture -- it's not enough until it's too much.

I like using ProTune to set my own colours ...

I appreciate the efforts you made for this video. I was planning to get the Hero 8 Black along with my Hero 5 Black. Had planned to use Hero 5 as helmet cam and Hero 8 for vlogging . But now i think Hero 7 Black would be a better option. I think GoPro won't release the upgradable software features as it will prevent people from buying the latest GoPro. Thanks again for the comparision 😊

I agree - GoPro aren't overly generous with their previous camera models!

wait, I recently bought a cheap second hand Hero 5 black and tested it for mountainbiking. my camera does not have this horrid stabilization you showed. Actually rather smooth and pleasant even as I go over roots and rocks. What´s that about? are you sure image stabilization was on with your hero 5?? Your hero 5 footage is unwatchable compared to mine.......
@TheTechnologyMan3 жыл бұрын
It really depends on the trails - smooth flowing trails will look a lot better. And it depends where the camera is mounted. Plus KZbin does a terrible job on compressing action camera footage!

I wonder if they'll stop that cancerous dongle ordeal and start including a built in 3.5 on the 9.

It is frustrating - I needed audio on it the other day and remembered I'd have to splash out for the media mod kit! Ended up recording audio to my iPhone and syncing it for free :).

GoPro is always going to leave the door open just like Apple, Samsung and everyone else for us to upgrade. You will never have the perfect camera, so for me, I will stay with the 4 silver 5, and 8 soon to arrive in the mail, the 7 crash for me way too much, no thank you!
@TheTechnologyMan5 жыл бұрын
Yep there's always something missing! It was an odd decision to have a non-removable lens.
@sipapito5 жыл бұрын
Well ,to be honest I think it’s all plan Ed out, business need to keep growing as you know GoPro stock was not doing so well. But than again They put things we want but than remove things we need !!!

Great video but crap cameras.! Killing your MicroSd cards helping you lose all your Holiday footage. GoPro's Sucks for the price they ask for it...full stop!
