ND filters are essential for fixed-aperture cameras like the GoPro. Because the aperture is fixed, these camera have only two other ways of controlling how much light reaches the sensor. The first way is by varying the shutter speed, but the method to achieve a "cinematic" look is to manually control the shutter speed (to maintain 180-degree rule), so that leaves varying the shutter speed (to adjust exposure) as no longer being an option. The only remaining option to control exposure is to vary the ISO. But ideally, you want ISO to be fixed (at MINIMUM) and, if ISO is already at minimum, the image will be overexposed under very bright conditions. That's where the ND filter comes into play. Think of it (and use it) as you would a lens aperture setting. The best ND filter to use in any given situation is one that will allow you to keep the ISO to a minimum and this ND value could vary greatly - therefore . . . the best ND filter kit to buy would be one with the MOST values of ND so that you can choose from a wide range (in small steps) of ND to use and keep the ISO to a minimum. If you don't have many steps of ND to choose from, you will be forced to use a stronger ND than you would need otherwise (to limit light) and then, in order to get a proper exposure, you will have to boost the ISO (which leads to noise in your footage.) Buy wisely. Just saying . . .

Its nog only depending on how much sun there is, but also the suroundings you are filming, for instance in snow or a dessert (where you have a lot of reflections of the ground) on a sunny day you would for sure pick a high nd filter.

I bought an aluminium housing for my Gopro on Ebay. It takes standard 52mm camera filters meaning I can use the ND filter I already have, or if I didn't already have one I could buy a cheap off the shelf one. Also I can mount polarizing filters etc. Yes, it's a bit more bulky and weighs more, but it offers more flexibility.

I actually used Singh Ray Galen Rowell ND while using Fujichrome Velvia Slide film with my wide angle. Since is darker on top and translucid at the bottom in a light shift between two areas. For my GoPro I only use a Nikon 52mm Circular Polarizer on a adapter. I don't get vignetting plus it saturates the colors. Hope this helps.

Good video. I see that people are giving you the thumbs down because they think it's not very cinematic. You are covering only one aspect of the "cinematic look" which is shutter speed. Maybe do another video shooting the same way but "flat" then color grade. The people who say they prefer the non ND Footage will be blown away with the look you get when you color grade, bumping up the contrast and making that flat profile come to life. Use your word for the year and expand on this video to encompass the entire "Cinematic look" ....good video!

I think the real difference people are seeing is the crazy sharpness of the non-filter version. At least that's what I'm picking up. That 'GoPro crisp' if you will. But with a nice grade on the GoPro footage, I'm assuming that filming with the (slightly) flatter profile picture on it, it will help it appear a little more cinematic? Just speculating

The smoothness and naturalness of using 180-degree rules in not related to being accustomed to seeing films. It's the way human brain works - the best for us is to calculate half of the movement, the first half needs to be recorded in a frame (otherwise the brain doesn't know the direction and a new position comes as a startling surprise) - when object moves in a frame, the best for it is to see the objects path halfway to the next frame. If we use more than 24fps per sec with the correct 180-degree shutter and not slowing to 24fps, the result can be similar to too short exposure because, normally, our brain can't register that many pictures in a sec and when we still catch some pics of it, those contain too little movement for until we catch the next pic.

HI. Ive got a couple of questions: 1) If I understood this correctly, if I usually film in 60fps, I would use ProTune (GoPro Hero black 5) to manually set the Shutter to 1/120, then put an ND32 filter on the camera ? 2) how to pick ISO settings ? the protune settings are set by default @ 1600 on mine. but if I set Protune to 1/120, I have to adjust ISO ?
@harVentures

I wouldn’t just throw the 32 on. I would experiment with it and see what it looks like. Also you want to keep your ISO as low as possible so you don’t introduce tons of grain.

You can't compare shots between two very different cameras. The Hero6 has a different chipset, also it has a higher dynamic range and a different color profile. Comparisons should be made with the same camera side by side. Also your notice more of a difference with refractions and reflections, highlights, and some shadows. I still enjoyed the video though, and I might pick up the same ND filter kit.

Its incorrect to say, that 1/48 gives more lighting than 1/5000 because camera automaticaly controles the PORTION of Light. While they both brighten enough - its the same PORTION of Light (with same iso). Cause it ls not only shutter speed, but iris too. So, when you putting nd filter camera just need more TIME to get the same PORTION of Light and the only thing it bother - is moving objects, and yes, they become cinematiclay blured. But again - its the same PORTION of Light.

It's about the 'cinematic' motion blur. This would have been a bit better comparison with gimbal. When stuff is shot handheld low shutter speed means lost detail especially on highly lossy footage like DSLR's, mirrorless cameras and GoPro's. There's couple of things to take in consideration when shooting 'cinematic' footage. - Manual exposure and white balance. You can't have changing exposure or WB during shot. - 180° shutter (double the frame rate in digital cameras) for cinematic motion blur. - 24 (23.976) fps for 'cinematic' look. Yeah, it's a real thing. It mostly has to do with the hardware used before, but it actually makes a difference compared to 30fps footage. - Perfect focus. - Amount of bokeh considering the "feel" you're after. Constant exposure and perfect focus are actually the case here if you know how to handle post edit. For example (and I haven't actually tried this 'trick' with GoPro) it's often better to use higher shutter speed so you don't lose detail when using non-cinema cameras (DSLR, mirrorless etc.) Cinematic motion-blur can be added in the post. Also, it's possible to convert to 24fps in the post too. If your camera captures crispiest footage using 60fps and 1/1000 shutter speed, then go for it. But you have to understand how to edit the footage to look cinematic. Usually higher than 30fps is never used if you're not shooting slo-mo but I have seen exceptions. Especially when using GoPro.
@usa1327

i agree with elite on this one, keep the shutter high so you dont blur out your detail. personally id rather use the ND for aperture changes for the correct field of view and boken im looking for. but if anything i learned the reason for the double the shutter speed rule today.

Fantastic comment! Thanks for sharing your insight. I'm still a little lost on whether or not I should use an ND filter on a gopro though :/ I assume that if you have a manual shutter speed set on gopro, the only way you can make sure it's exposed properly is through adjusting the ISO? Also, how do you get perfect focus on GoPro? Do you just have to rely on the auto focus? Or is there even autofocus considering GoPros don't have a shallow depth of field anyways. Thanks in advance! I'm a noob/hobbyist so please excuse my ignorance on the topic!

Responding to ND filters by saying "Who wants blurry video?" is like responding to an audiophile review of a high-end tube stereo amp by saying "Who wants distorted audio?" Solid State or digital amplifiers provide FAR less distortion, but audiophiles prefer tubes (even though the audio is far more distorted) because the distortion the tubes introduce 'warms up" the audio, making it easier to listen to and more like what we would hear in a live music setting. Motion blur does the same to video, making video look more like movies shot on film... and actually more like what our eyes actually see in real life. Much like 24fps looks more like film and 30fps looks more like a Soap Opera on TV, using 180 degree shutter goes a step further toward that "cinematic" feel (as do using the right lighting, shooting with a shallow depth of field, and letterboxing for a wider, Cinerama-style 21:9 aspect ratio.)

Hi Jeven - I understand the calc of doubling your shutter speed to that of your frame rate (no confusion there)...however, what if I DON'T have an ND Filter and i want to shoot in bright daylight?... If i speed my shutter HIGHER (to accommodate for the bright sun) would the video still look jittery? In other words (for example) I'm shooting at 30fps, and my shutter is at 200+ to not blow out the highlights of my video. Is my only solution to get ND filters so i can bring that shutter speed DOWN to 60?

ND filters just block light, you can achieve the effect of ND filters by just reducing the exposure value in protune settings unless you want to mess around with the shutter speed to keep it at 24 fps or shooting. These additional layers of glass will only create unwanted artifacts IMHO.
@JevenDovey
@JevenDovey 6 жыл бұрын
Not the same at all. ND filters allow you to keep your shutterspeed at 1/60 or 1/50 while bringing down your exposure. That’s how you get the typical cinematic look with motion blur

Thanks. ND filters don't have anything to do with color. They just bring down the exposure. They're not suppose to shift the color at all. Sometimes there is a shift because you're putting a new lens on top of your camera but usually its nothing that can't be fixed easily in your editing software

Also "Cinematic Look" is a bit of a wide concept. Motion blur? sure but what about depth of field, Dynamic Rage, sharpness, aspect ratio and all those others parameters? I am sorry but if you want a cinematic look just don't shoot on a Gopro, thats not what they are designed for or good at.

We are talking about fimling with a gopro here, not a dslr or something comparable. You cant even set the depth of field on a gopro.
@Biglouieeem
@Biglouieeem 6 жыл бұрын
you can't set the dof on any camera. you do so with ND filters, aperture size, camera distance to subject to background, and lens length.

So one of those cameras is the Hero 5 and the other is the Hero 6? I heard they have a little different colors, dynamic range and the stabilisation might somehow make a difference. Poor comparison, cant tell if image difference is because of filter or because of different cameras used.
@JevenDovey
@JevenDovey 6 жыл бұрын
Even if the image looks different you should only be focused on the motion blur. That’s what changes when you use ND filters
@theartisanangler2913

Great video but it doesn’t replace the lens, it’s a filter over the lens. You expose the lens when you take it off and on. Also an ND or “ neutral density” filter doesn’t help you adjust your shutter speed. Your shutter speed should be a reflection of the frame rate you have selected. It’s purpose is to allow you to lower your Aperture for a shallower depth of field.
@JevenDovey
@JevenDovey 6 жыл бұрын
You’re actually very wrong. It does replace the outer lens on the GoPro. Also you can reduce your shutterspeed to double your framerate without a ND filthier. It also allows you to open wider on your aperture but for a GoPro that doesn’t matter cause it’s so wide

This might be a dumb question, but why not just set the shutter speed manually?
@harVentures
@harVentures 6 жыл бұрын
He is setting it manually. Without the ND filter the GoPro is on auto. When you set it manually to double the frame rate it lets in more light. That’s why the ND filter is like sunglasses.

When you slow shutter speed you have to stop light to overexpose, ND filter decrease light, when you you use lower shutter speed fast moving objects looks blurry and you could feel the motion, and cinematic look must be softer one which is true in video. But color grading and stabilization makes more cinematic look than lower shutter speed for me.

in high glare situations the nd filter seems useful however outside of that regular looks better. IMO

man. i own and love the sony fdr x3000, i bought an nd filter for it in order to get that motion blur... the camera apparently did whatever it could to keep shutter speed high! (bump iso probably) anyhow, that was frustrating, i was after the same thing you are after here in this video and it wouldn't do it. i sent the nd filter back. the go pro can be set manually? i might need to get one...

I am starting to go with 1080p 60 so that I have more frames to smooth out the pans and the motions, I got way more chops in the panoramas that looked like the camera dropped frames but I think now that was image stabilization, with stabilization running out of space on the sensor. I dropped from 4k to 108p 60, to allow more presentations smoothness for computers displaying from youtube. I will be getting ND filters to see if I like the end result, but 24 frames I think is not looking good, especial with maybe 80mbs. I have a Sony FDR X3000 that has optical stabilized lens, that works better, and it shoots 100mbs @ 60fps. The new Fujifilm x-h1 will shoot 4k at 30 fps with 200mbs, and a new cinema profile, that is looking pretty good.

16:9 30 fps 1/60th shutter speed = "cinematic" in my opinion. I have had the need for an ND filter in some shots that are just too bright. going into the camera and lowering the exposure to compensate can introduce undesirable artifacts into your picture like grain. ND do have a place while filming. they can make post a bit easier too.

What's the point of using ND filter while leaving ISO at auto?? Your ISO may shoot up to the worst noisy ISO and you may not notice the point you would need lower factor ND because the auto-ISO compensates for too dark situations.

How come nobody makes a Session 4/5 lens with a ND filter built in? Meaning, you don’t need a separate camera cage mount to slip glass on? You know, if you break or shatter your Session lens, it would be that but with the ND part built in.

a very little of an obvious difference imho... even with the filters on it has that weird "choppy" look so the filter won't really improve it that much, but thanks for the theory explanation. That's always a good thing.
