i've only started about 5 months ago, but one big thing that's really helped is practicing reaction time drills as well as starting off on a wall to practice ball control

Meetup app is really good for finding gyms. Tokyo has a lot of public and private groups so I usually ask around and wiggle my way into practice sessions.
