Unfortunately, I do think those beginning scenes with Steve might just be flashbacks from halfway through the film when the _actual_ main characters are saved by him. It's very Jumanji x Pixels. I think this would've been slightly better without the 4 main characters who are self-inserts of the audience demographics, coz seeing Steve, on his own, discover, explore and play with the Minecraft world geuinely looks cool and fun and something more like an ACTUAL "Minecraft Movie".
