My family has come full circle. My parents settled in 100 hospital st in 1960 and eventually moved to pollokshields and then newton mearns.my dad had a cash and carry at gorbals cross in 1975 when he sadly passed away.i remember the baths across from the citizens theatre.now my son is stationed at gorbals police station which I think is built on what used to be hospital street/thistle st.

Thank you for putting this up , I was born in 1950 at188 Eglinton street , I have looked at a lot of videos about the Gorbals but the street never seems to get a mention . Even after living in France for over 47 years I am still a Glasgow girl at heart. Bonjour à vous tous de la Charente Maritime

Len. You brought back great memories. I was born in Ballater Street, 1942, lived in 250 Gorbals Street (1944-1956). I remember as a 9 year old, one day as I was chatting to two wee lassies who told me they were on the way up to the the Jews' school when we were attacked by stone throwing boys. (Imagine! Stonethrowers in the Gorbals!!) I walked the girls right up Pollokshaws Road to Turriff Street. (My wife asks what happened to this chivalrous child). I think one of the girls was called 'Watson' -she had fair hair, and they came from farther down Gorbals Street, around the Dunmore Street/Rutherglen Road area. Played football in Bedford Row (Sperrie) next to St. John's, and Surrey Street (The Starchie).

Hello, Age Concerned, glad you enjoyed the video. I lived at 10 Abbotsford Place till I was 15, and used to walk to Abbotsford School. I used to enjoy going to the pictures. I'd walk along Bedford St to Eglinton St, and there was the Coliseum and the Bedford ! It's funny how you remember walking 2 Jewish girls to school, and then getting attacked by stone throwing kids. Some kids could be cruel couldn't they. I live in Canada now, but still have strong ties with Glasgow as m sister still lives there.. Here a wee video I made during a trip back in 1987...kzbin.info/www/bejne/f5uWpoB-ab2Wb7c

What a great film, and a wonderfully informative commentary. It's a shame that noisy jangling by way of music has to accompany it.

they should have rounded up the planners and made them live in the flats, what a disgrace to this once wonderful area, beautiful old sandstone buildings torn down and used in bridges and flyovers in Castle street, yes the buildings needed work but what we have in their place is crap, I remember my old granny having to move to Toryglen and living 18 stories up, did they ever consider what happened if the lift broke down? pathetic planning by a once beautiful city
@jimmybobbgraham20475 жыл бұрын
I couldn't agree with you more. Its a tragedy that they pulled that whole area down and put up those monstrosities.

rosiethebear300 You should try and visit Glasgow next year, 2014. They're holding the Commonwealth Games, which is the only games Scotland competes as itself, not as part of the U.K.
