You were the first figure skater I had ever seen when I was 10 years old, and you and Sergei inspired me to get into figure skating. And you even inspired me to learn Russian. I will never forget the day that I saw you on the ice at the Calgary Olympics in 1988. You and Sergei change the face of pairs skating and brought it to a new level. Even after Katia grew, their throws and lifts were just as effortless. That’s a testament to Sergei’s strength and quality. He didn’t get enough credit for it in the beginning of their careers because she was so tiny and everyone assumed he had it easy.

Yes, effortless. Sergei also had a very keen sense for what looked good. Because he actually had very good lines, excellent turnout, and even when skating alone, he was a skater with very classic lines. Many male figure skaters are not as elegant on the ice as Sergei. They both will be cherished.
