Yes, England played exceptionally well in horrendous conditions. One of the finest performances by their national side. In fact, I've not seen a better England performance at a World Cup, although others may disagree.They went direct when Astle came on but, in their defence, they wanted to exploit Brazil's nervousness with high balls. I'm of Italian descent and support Italy. We know the final result but I'm proud of the way we played for an hour. We were a match until Gerson's goal. @paulstillwell38744 ай бұрын
@@marcellogenesi6390 Pelé's dribbling ability was far better than Messi. I am currently producing an extensive film about Pelé and have watched over 500 clips of him playing for Brazil and Santos. Thrashing great European sides like Eusebio' s Benfica. Inventing the 'Cruyff' turn against Juventus in 1961 (he actually did the turn against Ballon D'or winner Sivori). Beating Barcelona, AC Milan (who included the great defender Cesare Maldini). Dribbling past 5 Inter Milan defenders in a tight penalty area to score (which included the great Trapattoni). Most people who think Messi is the best don't bother to do any research into Pelé, apart from watching a couple of World Cup '70 clips. At the Maracana stadium there is a plaque to commemorate a goal Pelé scored against Brazil Cup holders Fluminense where he took the ball on the edge of his own penalty area and beat all 11 opponents on his own to score. The radio commentary of the goal and newspaper reports are all online. There are newspaper reports online where he played against European champions across many countries and dribbled past 7 players to score, or 8 players to score, in front of sell out stadiums across Europe. I have seen film clips of him nutmegging opponents from 5 yards away. I saw him dribble and shoot perfectly with the left foot then right foot. Plus, he did it all on very rough, bumpy pitches, you can see the ball bouncing erratically on the surface as he Dribbles, but he still controls it. He does it in hard leather boots with opponents who can hack him down without getting sent off. Messi however, plays on surfaces as smooth as a carpet (he even refused to play on certain surfaces in USA) and in boots made with the latest technology to grip and feel the ball. Messi could never do what Pelé did if he had to play in those conditions. He hasn't even done most of what Pelé did while playing on perfect conditions. Football writer John Carlin, wrote in The Times newspaper in 2022, he is a Barcelona season ticket holder and has watched Messi's entire career. He was convinced Messi was the greatest. But when he started researching footage of Pelé he realised Pelé was the greatest of all time (his article is online). He described Pelé as Messi, Maradona and Ronaldo all in one player. Even Argentine manager Menotti (who coached Maradona and watched all of Messi's career) said "When you talk about football, don't bring Pelé into it because he is from another planet".

The epitaph from Pele says it all. Given the strength of the gloves, the density of the ball, the!save is akin to stopping a medicine ball; the greatest moment of perfection from beginning to end.RIP two legends.

Just sensational. I grew up on footy in the 70's. I actually prefer those years to today's game. With all the hype around the EFL & the game in general, the "old" game tends to be forgotten or downplayed. There were as many superstars back then as there are today, and far less nonsense. What a great upload. Thank you! And superb quality as well!
@paulstillwell3874 Жыл бұрын
You are welcome. I wish this save was filmed from all the different angles that modern saves are. It would look even more impossible. Banks is diving backwards towards his own net to get a ball that has already gone passed him and nearer the net, then he has to judge how high it will bounce off the ground when he reaches it, then he doesn't just knock it around the post, he actually scoops it up over the bar! A miracle.

I like the way just one defender pats him on the head, as a well done and acknowlegement of what a good save it was, as the other defenders start lining up for the upcoming corner as if it was just a routine save.Nowadays Banks would be showered with kisses by the players,hugs all round,pulling off of shirts and gestures to the crowd for a big roar.None of the present day pantomime of professional football is in evidence here.

Did anyone notice the bobble as jairzinho crossed and still found pele's head superb skill
@paulstillwell38745 ай бұрын
Yes, most people don't watch this closely enough to appreciate the astonishing skill from every player. The ball lifted up, but without looking, he fires a pinpoint cross onto Pelé who leaps higher than any defender and heads the perfect header down to bounce in front of the keeper....and then the save.... All of it unsurpassed skills.
@CaminoAir5 ай бұрын
It's a great shame that modern camera coverage (obviously) wasn't available for moments like this. We would be able to appreciate exactly what Banks managed to do if we could just see this save from at least two other angles.
@paulstillwell38745 ай бұрын
@@CaminoAir I agree. During the clip there is a brief moment when we see Banks from the goal, after he has made the save, so there must have been a guy filming it from just behind the goal line, near the right post. So somewhere out there maybe there is footage of the save from that angle, which would be spectacular

@@paulstillwell3874 Is there any chance that a computer simulation could be created, or is that not possible with only a single camera view?

@@CaminoAir that's a good point. I am sure there are enough photos from different angles to simulate it. Unfortunately today, people are so obsessed with the modern game and the Prem, that these great moments from the past can get forgotten. It needs a computer whizz who is interested in football history. 😊 Having said that, in Brazil they simulated a goal by Pelé that wasn't filmed, where he flicked the ball over the head of 3 defenders, one by one, then scored. The angle and compressed picture here make the goal look smaller than it really is.. there are some photos not shown here (from straight on) that illustrate the distance he had to cover after the ball left Pele's head. He starts at the near post on the cross, has to watch it over his head to end up behind him, moves central and then dives sideways and backwards to push a bouncing ball going like a rocket up and over. He's not even made it to the centre of the goal yet as it is met by Pele's head and he still manages to get there somehow. Impossible made possible.
