Silence is an endangered species, says Gordon Hempton. He defines real quiet as presence - not an absence of sound, but an absence of noise. The Earth, as he knows it, is a “solar-powered jukebox.” Quiet is a “think tank of the soul.” We take in the world through his ears. (Original Air Date: May 10, 2012)
About the Guest:
Gordon Hempton is founder and vice president of The One Square Inch of Silence Foundation based in Indianola, Washington. His books include, together with John Grossman, “One Square Inch of Silence: One Man's Quest to Preserve Quiet.” He has produced more than 60 albums of natural soundscapes.

Gordon Hempton is a man who was starting his work far ahead of the crowd. We need this kind of quiet now more than ever. There is a great interview with him in The Sun magazine too.

this is why I bought my farm. Northern Alberta silence but for the wind and rain, The song birds, frogs, elk bugling, moose snorting, bees buzzing, the little stream. Sometimes a symphony of creations sounds all come together. The natives here call trees 'standing people' for many reasons. Learn to listen to them., they will tell you all you need to know.

Intensely and quietly reflective and inspiring. Reading this month's interview with Gordon Hempton in "The Sun" magazine brought me here, to hear more.

I am currently looking for a quiet place to live in the city away from traffic. But I’m realizing it is almost impossible!! Noisy places don’t even have birds because birds can’t communicate with one another. Gordon makes me not feel alone in the search for silence. It’s a basic human need. When people say they are unaffected by noise I don’t believe them!

This is bizarre but a ghost hunting app spit out the words "Gordon; Writer; Sound of Silence", which led to an online search to find out if anyone other than Paul Simon wrote the song. I was pleasantly surprised to find it was something completely different, which led me to this video.

I read an Article about this fellow, and I absolutely reject his assertion that human generated sounds pervade every corner of the planet. Guess what buddy, remote areas that people never go to are still a thing, we as a species are not as dominating and all powerful as you imagine.

He's only been doing this professionally for 40 years. Clearly you're more knowledgeable than he is though 🙄
