This is probably Gordon Lightfoot's best piece, that for some reason never got much play in the early '70's, when I was a teenager. Forty years later and I find it here; what a tear-jerker, what a gut-wrencher. They don't write or sing music like this anymore...Thank you for this wonderful post!

This is my favourite recording of this song. Gordon's voice is heard so well...more than the studio recording or any other live recording I've heard. I just can't get enough of this mans voice...it's like warm milk and honey . Every night in bed before I fall asleep I listen to this tune and Beautiful...my two favourites of Gordon's. There is not now and I fully believe never will be another voice as pure and beautiful as Gordon's.

To each his own. Glen Campbell for me. Each has its own virtues and, of course, it was GORDON whose rare GENIUS conceived it. THANK YOU, Gordo❤

@@waynesanchez6504👍🏼I believe Gordon wanted Glen To release this gem, along with the beautiful arrangement accompanying, Glen. I’m only aware of Glen releasing it, and Gordon’s on his albums. But it was Glen, just as Peter Paul and Mary aced, ‘In the early morning rain, that produced a Magnificent version, of this beauty.

I met Gordo at one of his concerts south of San Jose Cal. . My wife and I went to it . We had to walk across the stage to the seats when. I saw on the other end of the stage and waved to him and he walked to us. I met him half way and we shook hands and introduced ourselves. We talked about fifteen minutes and then he had to start his concert. It was great as usual. This happened in the 1980 s .

God knows I absolutely LOVE several of this immensely talented and DEDICATED genius. It puzzles me, though, that he thought "Early Morning Rain" was his BEST song. THIS weaves an amazingly intoxicating, addictive tale, of a man, racked by the agony of unspeakable loss and grief, at once trying to convince himself he lost nothing, while trying to come to terms with that loss. Brilliant

My beloved Gordon....I wonder if my life will ever be tolerable now he is gone. We saw him at least 20 times in concert over 50 years. There was nobody like him (and I know music and it's my 2nd grand passion after my husband and Scottie) and I'm grateful to God I found Gordon in 1970 -- the same year I found my husband. Hubby always drove me to seee my Gordon, even if we hd to stay at a motel overnight, or cross the Peace Bridge to Canada. He came to my CIty several times, and we always went so I could just fall in love all over again with Gordon in person. It was like he was the only one onstage and singing straight to me, I just started to cry, again, so its time to go,

This is probably the most beautiful song ever written by anyone - thank you Gordon, however I think in this performance Gordon got the words wrong and missed the verse "the last time I walked with her....." Nonetheless it expresses a deep regret that I have had to live with for a very long time now....

Take heart, my friend, Johnston. Many, if not most, of us live with similar regrets. Sometimes, things just don't work out the way we might have hoped or intended. I truly believe that if we are of sincere heart, all will be made good when we step to the other side, and peace will cradle us eternally.
