Tomorrow is the 48th anniversary of the sinking of the Fitz. This song still touches people today as it did back in August 1976, almost one year after the ship sank. If you lived near the great lakes, you knew the story. I was a Michigan teenager in high school when the boat sank. With no home computers, email, internet, cell phones or 24/7 cable news, people including the families of the men that died learned about the missing freighter when the opened their morning newspapers. Gordon Lightfoot died earlier this year. All proceeds from this song have always gone to the families of the men that died.

I grew up in Michigan, was born one month after this came out, and this song has had continuous airplay in my area during my entire 47 years. One of those songs that always touches people. But, to be fair, a story told by Gordon Lightfoot tends to always be timeless.

Gordon Lightfoot is a Canadian icon. All of the proceeds from this song went to the families of the sailors lost in this tragedy. Gordon Lightfoot passed this past year and they rang the bell 30 times to honour him as well.

The Great Lakes are no joke, and Superior may be the worst of them. The number of sailors resting at the bottom of these lakes numbers in the thousands.
