I secured a direct training contract at Bristows. But quick correction, Bristows doesn't recruit from Vacation Schemes as they don't actually run one! They recruit all 10 trainees from direct apps :)

Hi Gordon, thanks for your sharing and it is very very very helpful as usual! I was wondering I managed to attend some open days in the big firms, while I constantly failed in the vs apps - is that partly bc I did not showcase well the open day experience in the apps? thanks again!

I think if you applied to a firm and you went to their open day, sure you should articulate what you learned at that event in great details. But other than that, I wouldn't say not explaining open day experience well enough is a sole reason that will lead to a rejection of your application. There may be other aspects you could improve.

I would say in general the earlier the better (unless you’ll have added experiences if you submit later)

I was wondering where you find the statistics for the number of positions which are offered to direct applicants, would it be on the firm's websites?

I can't remember exactly but I think it's from the statistics listed out for the Cambridge law fair. I relied on them when I applied for direct TCs so I personally think they are quite useful.
