Universities used to be the place where "free thinkers" could study, discuss and think outside the box. Oxford and Cambridge universities didn't become the seat of great thinkers and inventors by telling people what to think and what to discuss, they became that way by NOT limiting what to think or discuss. Critical thinking is how society is allowed to move forward. Restricted thinking is how society moves backwards. I'm a 62 year old straight guy and Stephen fry is the person I most want to hug. Stephen Fry is highly intelligent, well read, knowledgeable open-minded, humble and non judgmental. For me, his greatest gift is his ability to come up with and use the perfect word here and there and everywhere to say exactly what he means to say without ambiguity. I could listen to him for hours. Stephen was educated in the Classics. He has a wide vocabulary and a strong command of the language. There was a time when his eloquence wouldn’t have been considered quite so remarkable. The drop in standards of grammar and vocabulary are largely to blame, but no one is allowed to say that anymore. Apparently it’s all good as long as the person you are talking to understands what you’re saying. And yet, at the end of it all, we all know that people like Stephen are able to communicate more accurately and effectively, and it’s not simple pedantry or self-aggrandisement.

Getting arrested for theft of said credit card and spending 3 months in a young offenders institute to getting good grades on his school exams on release and passing the entrance exam for Cambridge to study on a scholarship. Getting an honours degree and meeting his fellow comedy actors during this time like Rowan Atkinson (Mr Bean to many) and Hugh Laurie (of House fame). Countries like Denmark have a variety political parties you can vote for in between the extreme left or extreme right. You can argue that nothing gets done then but actually the end result seem to be that in most cases no political party has enough votes alone to make legislations. So they have to include other parties and come to a compromise. I think both the US and the UK could learn from this

Also it has much more respect for the votes people give. I'm from germany and while I won't go into our whole voting system we mainly vote for a party and the party then becomes a % of seats in the parliament. So in principle almost every vote counts in the end. (there is a 5% threshhold that parties have to overcome to enter parliament) In systems like the US where it is winner takes all only almost half of the votes don't count in the end, because they are not for the winner and those people subsequently don't really have any representaion.

I love this man. I followed him since 1989 I guess, when he had a comedy show together with Hugh Laurie. If his name doesn’t ring a bell, you probably know him as the lead character Dr. Gregory House from the series ‘House M.D.’, or just ‘House’. The comedy show was called ‘A Bit of Fry and Laurie’. It was a show unlike anything else I’ve ever watched and thought it was hilarious, even though it was quite hard to follow for the young Dutch boy that I was. I think it’s worth watching some of their sketches, which were partially improvised, here on KZbin. Even though there certainly are many differences between the two, he frequently reminds me of Christopher Hitchens. Both very outspoken and both masters with words. They both formed a team in a long debate about the statement “The Catholic Church is a Force for Good in the World”. You’ll be able to find this two hour debate by searching for that statement. Maybe you may need to add the names ‘Hitchens’ and ‘Fry’, but I don’t think it’s a hard search. In all fairness, I thought their opponents made it a little too easy, because the native language of those two is NOT English. Then again, it’s not the debate by itself that I think is impressive. It’s the opening statements and the rebuttals of Hitchens and Fry that are so powerful that it’s almost impossible to disagree (in my opinion). I’m not sure if this debate, or even just the powerful opening statements, is something you would like to comment on on your channel, because…. well, Americans and religion…, but I’m pretty sure you would be interested in watching this debate. Sorry, this is just a recommendation for you from someone who feels really strongly about this, especially because it’s not so much about personal beliefs, but about the position of the Catholic Church and what’s wrong with it according to Hitchens and Fry. And I learned many things that I had no idea about before I saw that video. I understand that this may seem like I want to push you into certain directions. I honestly don’t. But I saw how much you admired Stephen Fry and his mindset, just like I do. And I thought this would interest you because of your own points of view that were in line with the wordings of Stephen Fry. I loved watching this video. Thanks! 🧡🧡🧡

Stephen Fry used to host a British TV show called QI (Quite Interesting, a comical look on generally what a lot of people would call boring topics & discussions) One of the rounds the English Civil war was discussed and how many people in the UK don’t know an awful lot about it. One of the guests on the show can’t remember his name said this was a good thing as one figure during the war was evil and horrible. Stephen responded “but you would know to feel that way if you didn’t know about it” that response for me anyways made me respect him a lot more, because he understands the value of knowledge and how no matter how pure or evil history is somethings have to be remembered and taught

Amazing i does not know these two had debated. I've huge respect for both, and it's great to hear the opener from fry and from you seeing the scene. This sense of being able to put the topic on the table and discuss it without ad hominems should be regarded as a basic tenet of adulthood imo. Fry was educated in the British "public school" (=private schools) system, where debating societies and rhetoric classes are things.

Years ago I met a racist and listened to him, then I put my point and realized it was how he had been taught to think, anyway we talked regularly for about 2yrs and became friends and then to everyones surprise he fell madly in love with a very beautiful black girl, but the reason I'm posting this is because a man had driven his van into a line of people waiting for Friday prayers outside a mosque in Bristol killing an elderly man and the then Welsh secretary' response was that we should not allow this van driver and his posted remarks to appear online. If we don't engage with people how the hell do we change their minds. Political silencing never works.
@No447783 ай бұрын
I think this is a bit different. Individually, we might be able to reach people and engage in discussion. But attackers like this, their whole goal is being discussed. They don't necessarily want to convince you, they want you to hear their points and be enraged and try to engage them in discussion. The discussion itself is the whole point. "We don't talk to fascists" is an informed decision. They cannot be talked with, as a movement

Thank you for showing this. I have watched the whole debate several times and enjoyed the collaboration between Stephen Fry and Jordan Peterson, but I have never watched just Fry's contribution. Shortly after watching the debate for the first time, I bought the book "Political Correctness Gone Mad" in which the entire debate was published. Although I have never read the book in its entirety, I have used it to find quotes for various talks. When I saw your video I just read Stephen Fry's contribution to get an even better understanding of what he was saying and I must say it was a delight.

The great irony of this compilation is that its very existence confirms what Stephen says in the beginning; We only listen to the people we like. To take Stephen Fry's advice against locking ourselves into echo chambers and turn it into an echo chamber is kind of deviously genius. I know this wasn't the intention of the uploader, but it's basically what you do when you only record the argumentative highlights of one part of a four-way debate. For that reason alone, you should watch the entire debate. Unfortunately, it turns, as most public debates do, into a bit of an unfocused mess, and Stephen himself is guilty of not letting people finish and making jokes on their behalf, despite what he promised in his self-introduction (to listen). But hey, maybe you'll learn something else from watching the debate. It's been too long since I watched it to tell what I learned.

Heidi, I'm only 11 minutes into this reaction/discussion video and can already tell, without any doubt at all, that you are probably capable of having a laugh and to have that laugh out loud and that the sort of thing that might evoke that laughter, which is probably an extraordinary racket replete with gasps for air and interspersed with snorts and slurps - something bordering on the sound of heavy sobbing - might just be the same sort of thing that gets me myself every time, (and I assure you, in my case, all of those things I just suggested might be true of you in a laughing fit is very true in my own.) Have you ever seen "A Little Bit of Fry and Laurie"? Imagine this: a very young Stephen Fry and Doctor House collaborating way back, long before digital photography had even been imagined, working together with celluloid (which really was all they had to make the sort of TV that they wanted to) to make people laugh until, if possible, they died. I love myself "A Bit of Fry and Laurie" and have very nearly died watching it several times. I wish I could say I' believe I've seen all of it, but although I've seen a WHOLE LOT of it, I'm fairly certain that I've at least another twenty percent of their overall output to see until I get anywhere near that blessed place in the history of British skit comedy. Here's a little bit on KZbin to start you off, IF, that is, you need to be started off. kzbin.info/www/bejne/qWXFgaZ9qLN6n5Y Than you so much for the upload. I've seen bits of this, particularly the bit where M.E. Dyson spends a good amount of time accusing Dr. Peterson of being a privileged racist with anger issues. It'll be really nice to watch the whole thing again, because I'll be honest, over the last year or two, that personal attack levelled by Dyson against Peterson really seems to have eaten up nearly all of the rest of my memory of the debate., which is a shame All the better then than you came along. Thanks again. I'm gonna dive into that now. I hope you enjoy that "Little Bit of Fry and Laurie". Ciao!

He talked about movie producer Harvey Weinstein that demanded young actresses to sleep with him or not get a fair chance on a career or be in movies.
@hughtube51545 ай бұрын
Yes. As Stephen Fry recounts it here, Harvey used to be the head of Miramax studios, which launched the directing careers of Quentin Tarantino and Kevin Smith, amongst others. Weinstein was seen as the most powerful man in Hollywood because of his track record of producing low budget films that did really well at the box office and / or scooped up at awards ceremonies. (Shakespeare In Love being the prime example; he invented the bombardment of the press association in order to get his films Oscar nominated. Good Will Hunting being another ecample.) He leveraged that power to force himself on wannabe actresses, using quid pro quo tactics where sexual favours were returned with movie parts. In the case of some, he would force himself on the unwilling, behaviour which came back to haunt him as he's been jailed for sexual assault. The #Metoo movement started so actors could tell of their exploitation at his, and other predators', hands.

I am really happy to see you reacting to Stephen Fry. He is always worth listening to. He also appeared on other similar debates with people like Christopher Hitchins. It is funny, how these debates are incredibly popular in the Anglo-American world, especially at respected colleges / universities but much less elsewhere. Also, often about topics like religion, or even evolution (as if this is seriously "controversial"), and if you want to hear another eloquent voice with a deep sense of decency, you should react to similar discussions with Richard Dawkins (topic are often atheism and science vs. religion). Another British voice which you might enjoy is the one of John Cleese (from the legendary Monty Python group), who always spoke his mind in a very eloquent manner, not shy of talking about topics like religion, politics and the absurdity of life. There are probably many more who are really worth watching for their way to express themselves alone ... Another word about the topic political correctness and how absurd it is ... I recently saw a black American reactor (or should I have said PoC? sorry can't resist) who said about Mark Twain's Huckleberry Finn, that it is "a book for children which has a lot of bad language, specifically the N-word". And I was deeply shocked, how this is the only content you could remember from it. It was re-released in 2011 with all N-words replaced by "slave". Which is IMHO ridiculous. I mean, it is about the friendship of a poor white kid with a runaway slave, and they want to escape an inhumane situation with a houseboat to flee to Canada, seemingly not knowing the Mississippi flows south due to lack of education, and in the end Huck flees to become a Native American, because he likes freedom much more than the system that wants to "educate" him, after all he has experienced. Removing a "bad word" in this highly debated case just softens the history. And if this is all you remember from this deeply anti-racist, freedom-loving book, that Hemingway called "the beginning of all new American literature", is devastating. It is not about if you are offended by a word, it is about the actual content, and if you can only remember the offense you felt by reading a book, and not it's actual message, you have to re-learn reading books in the first place. Really enjoyed your reaction, Heidi, and hope to see much more content like this on your channel. And yes - eloquent language is powerful. And it makes perfectly sense to listen to people who are masters in this field.

It is vitally important for the health of a democracy to be allowed to have an opinion on any subject.
