When I was growing up in the 50's souvenir Lugers and P38's sold for $20 everywhere... and along with helmets and Japanese swords/flags WERE everywhere.

I saw this pistol when a customer brought this in to John Martz's shop. He called me up to have me come over to look at it and asked me if I could duplicate the grips in elephant ivory; I looked at the whole pistol and the grips and took pictures of everything. I said yes, I can duplicate the grips and proceeded to estimate the cost. I did the grips, carved them and they took me about a month and a half working six hour days. It was tedious but the customer was happy with the final product. This occurred in 1978 when elephant ivory was legal. The grip material alone was $350.00 and I had to select the ivory for fineness of grain.

Amazing piece of work right there. When I was younger I was painting at an elderly couples home. We got to talking about the war for some reason. He says follow me .went into a small room slash closet where a huge safe was in the back wall. Opened it up reaches in and hands me a beautiful engraved p38. Only one I've ever seen in person. Didn't really elaborate on how he came by it. I didn't quite at the time really undersand what I was looking at. Probably 20 years ago, I'm 52 now I sure do get it. Considering Göring was the commander of the Luftwaffe and liked to award aces with Lugers I can only assume this one was awarded to somebody in his command. Seems a little fancy for an ordinary pilot, I’d assume it’s somebody in the upper ranks.
