Creating gelli plate backgrounds can be the easiest way to start painting papers for collage and really, any creative project.
With just a few rolls of a brayer, and a couple of colors, gel plate printing can inspire and surprise you for hours.
In this episode I cover some of the basics of gel printing and the tools, materials I use to create all sorts of backgrounds for my mixed media art.
I mention the Gel Print Guide during the video - if you’d like to get your hands on it, click the link above.

Thanks for the great video. I was preparing to finally use all the gel plate stuff I obtained over time, along with some materials I'm testing. I happened upon your channel, I guess because I did a search for ''painted papers with gel plate,' Wow. That was fortunate, because you are a GREAT teacher. I now have to wait until morning, but I have everything set to go. And now I won't freak out at the weird stuff happening, with my plate repelling the paint, I appreciate you orienting us newbies to the value of using the plate with such textures, & how the surprises are one of the best parts. I've seen people use the plate in ways that made me wonder why they don't just direct paint, & had no answer for that when i asked. You show me a good use of this tool. You helped orient me to the experience stupendously, perfectly. I've watched some other videos over time, while having my lunch or whatever, & you really stand apart as a great teacher, with a good logical order to the video & explanations WOW! Thanks for not driving me crazy with rambling without logic & order to what you are doing. I appreciate your guide offer too; so i hope it's available. I look forward to seeing more of your videos

Yes - I really wasn't sure what to think about Temu, Some items I purchased were a bit disappointing, but the gelli plate was not one of them. How do you keep your plate protected?
@salliebinder60
@salliebinder60 10 ай бұрын
I wasn‘t sure about Temu either but the few stamps and stencils I‘ve ordered from them are absolutely 💯. I keep this gelli plate in a tin container which I bought a while ago from Amazon. It‘s the Diana Wakely one from ranger and works really well. I have also made a variety of my own gel plates with a recipe which includes isopropyl alcohol to prevent mold. I store each one of these of various sizes on their own piece of glass (from cheap picture frames from the dollar store) rimmed with duck tape (which are also useful as palettes ☺️) I cover each of the gelli plates with a piece of teflon permanent baking foil. Plastic sandwich containers have also proven handy for storing the smaller ones..glass Tupperware is also an option.

Nice tip on the Murphy's oil soap and water in a spray bittle. I keep a dollar store kitty litter pan of MOS/water nearby. I toss stencils, brayers stamps, even small gel plates in forxeasy clean up at end of session. (Even the next day!)

I love my 16 x 20" gel press plate! I can fit an 8 x 10 stencil on one side and flip it over on the other side for a reverse print. I frequently use part of the plate as my palette to brayer paint. That avoids to oval shapes one gets from the brayer spreading paint directly to the plate.

Brilliant, now I need to see your technique for creating the grunge. I know you did it by not cleaning your plate but I don’t either and my plate never looks this great. Is the remaining paint black? Please, more GP videos. I’d be interested in your book, too, if it’s not primarily remedial.
@PaintedPaperStudio
@PaintedPaperStudio 9 ай бұрын
Thanks for taking the time to comment, Lynn. 😀 The deep grunge was made by using the gel plate as my mixing pallet for other painted papers. When mixing, the paint dries with more texture and depth than when just pulling a rolled-out print. That's what creates that grunge. Does that make sense? I'm actually including that in an upcoming video that I'm working on now. The Gel Print Guide is a video-based guide - I'm not sure if you would consider it remedial or not, but the good news is that it is free of charge. You can find the link to it in the description.

@PaintedPaperStudio

Hi Clare! I do have a couple of videos here (links at the end of the message). But I want to say that it's ok to use your papers any way you want. Grab a stack of copy papers and just start gluing pieces of your gel prints on them. It doesn't matter if it looks good, it only matters if it feels good. The more you do this, the more comfortable it will become. In no way do I want this to come of "preachy" it just that I know what happens when creatives start focusing less on the outcome and more on the feeling of making. And here's the best part - if you don't like something you've created, you can just throw it out 😃 it's only paper. Here are a few of my videos: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iJbFnYptq56hjqc kzbin.info/www/bejne/fXS5e2dqaZV3h9U kzbin.info/www/bejne/fZWWfY1_jbF1f80 You can also follow people like www.youtube.com/@ElizabethStHilaire or www.youtube.com/@FroyleArt they are both very inspirational. 🥰

Hi Jackie...really enjoying your Gel Print Guide and all of your terrific, helpful videos...you are an excellent instructor! Couple questions: I notice your fluid acrylics have different tops than the ones my 4oz bottles have (they are more like the high flow tops). Do the larger bottles of fluid come with those tops or have you replaced them? Seem like they would pour more easily. Also, I store my Gelplates in Ranger gelliplate tins.. wondering if the Temu plate came in a clamshell? Would Murphy's Oil spray be okay to use on the gel plate or is it better to mix up a spray bottle with the actual Murphy's oil soap?
@PaintedPaperStudio
@PaintedPaperStudio 5 ай бұрын
Hi Robin! Thanks so much for your kind words 🤗. I’ll answer in reverse order. Yes to using Murphy’s Oil Soap on your gel plate. It will get all the crusty bits off so easily. The Temu plate did not come in a clamshell, but it’s small enough that I was able to put it on a piece of plexiglass and stored it in a cardboard box. The tops on my Fluid Acrylics were added by me, and they are a complete FAIL. The fluid acrylic is just too viscous and what has happened is that it dries up inside the screw top. 🙁 So, lesson learned - as I replace the used bottles I will not be using the screw tops. All great questions, Robin. 🥰
@RobinGayl
@RobinGayl 5 ай бұрын
@@PaintedPaperStudio Thanks so much! Too bad about the tops...I thought it looked ike it might make it easier to apply the fluid acrylics with those caps. Two more questions- how do you find the Nova paints compared to the Golden Fluids and do you ever use the Golden Opens?
@PaintedPaperStudio
@PaintedPaperStudio 5 ай бұрын
Again, great questions, @@RobinGayl. The Nova paints are not quite fluid acrylic, but also not heavy body - they're somewhere in between. I love nova colors for their incredibly high pigment load and spreadability. Plus, you cannot beat the prices. And having said that, I adore Golden Fluid Acrylics - it's like both are my children - I love them equally...just differently. 💜 As for the open acrylics, I have not played with them very much. Tht might have to be my next exploration 😍

Hi Gwen! Onion skin has a smoother surface than rice paper - it's more like the back (shiny) side of rice paper. It's almost like a very thin piece of acetate. I bought it to stamp text on and use in collage, and found I really like it for gelli printing. It's also great with inks 😍
