Gornergratbahn - The Matterhorn Railway | Matterhorn Ski Paradise
An amazing scenic trainride through the snow by cogwheel train in Switzerland from the car free ski village Zermatt to mount Gornergrat. From the Gornergrat there is an spectaculair view over the swiss alps upon mount Matterhorn and the Monta Rosa Massif and the Gorner Glacier. The Matterhorn is also famous because of the TOBLERONE chocolate candybar with the drawing of the mountain Matterhorn in its logo. The narrow gauge rack railway tracks of the Gornergratbahn (The Matterhorn Railway) are aroud 9 kilometres long and from Zermatt you’ll pass the stations Findelbach, Riffelalp, Riffelberg and Rotenboden before it will arrive on Gornergrat at 3089m. The Glacier Express can bring you from Chur, Disentis, Andermatt, Brig and Visp to Zermatt in Canton Valais. | Recorded: February 2015

Dal Gornergrat si gode una vista spettacolare sulle alpi svizzere sul monte Cervino, sul massiccio del Rosa Rosa e sul ghiacciaio del Gorner. Il Cervino è famoso anche per il candybar al cioccolato TOBLERONE con il disegno del monte Cervino nel suo logo. Hallo....Bin diese Bahn schon x mal gefahren und habe schon auf dem Gipfel des Matterhorns gestanden.....Wollte auch im Grindelwald die Eiger Nordwand durchsteigen, aber das war dann doch eine Nummer zu hoch für mich.....Aber die Bahnfahrt von Lauterbrunnen über die kleine Scheideg ...durch den Eiger bis zum Junfraujoch war ein imposantes Erlebnis.

I will always remember my trip to Gornergrat with my dear dad. It was July. we arrived at this station in shorts and it began to spit snow flurries! He's been gone for three years now, but our trip to Switzerland will always been one of my best memories with him. Seeing it again choked me up a bit. I hope to take my own young son there soon!

Hello Bill, Thank you for your comment. Beautiful memories you have. As a matter of fact I did this trip with my father as well. We planned a round trip in Switzerland together and this was not exactly on the route. But after checking the weather and webcam we decided last minute to travel to Zermatt and take the Gornergratbahn. In the end this was one of the most beautiful train rides we made together. Hopefully we will be able to travel together again in the nearby future. I hope you will be able to do this or any other special trip with your son as well. It creates great and treasurable memories. Incroyable ascension en train vers le Matterhorn à couper le souffle, avec des prises de vue sous des angles inattendus ! Er chez nos amis suisses, les trains ce croisent en montagne, comme les TGV chez nous, sauf que chez nous, les TGV ne passent pas sur la tête des skieurs !!! !!! Une prise de vue extraordinaire, peut-être la meilleure que j'aie vu sur le site, Bravo !

Was diese Bahn so interessant, faszinierend und nahezu einmalig macht, ist die Drehstromelektrifizierung mit 2 Phasen Oberleitung und einer Phase in den Schienen. Neben der Gornergratbahn gibt es heute noch die Jungfraubahn, die dieses Stromsystem verwendet. Früher war diese Art der Elektrifizierung im Nordwesten Italiens bis in die 60er und 70er Jahre sehr weit verbreitet bis hinein in die Schweiz und Tirol (Brenner Südrampe). In der Anfangszeit der Elektrifizierung um und knapp vor 1900 waren Brown Boveri und Budapest (Fa. Ganz) starke Treiber für Drehstrombahnen. Die Straßenbahn in Lugano war in der Anfangszeit ein Pilotbetrieb für die Drehstromelektrifizierung und Drehstromantrieb. Mit dem Siegeszug der Leistungselektronik in den 70er Jahren wurde die komplizierte Drehstromelektrifizierung überflüssig und von der Verwendung der vorteilhaften Drehstromantriebstechnik entkoppelt.

Great video! We took this train a few years ago in July, and hiked from Gornergrat to the Riffelsee where we had a spectacular view of the Matterhorn reflected in the water. Nice to see it in winter, it's also very beautiful covered in glistening white snow.
