Thank you for sharing with us your experience! Your video takes me back in time, to 1998, in which I did the Gosaikunda trail (Dhunche to Sundarijal) This was the starting point!....Or the point, in fact, where I fell in love with Nepal. Since then, along the years, I did some other treks: The Low Mustang (2005), Annapurna circuit (2011), twice the EBC 3 passes (years 2012 and 2016), and the Kanchenjunga Circuit (North to south 2019) This year, I will return to Nepal, to do again the Gosaikunda trek(Dhunche, Gosaikunda , and the Helambu down to Sundarijal) - this time with my mid grandchild - 16 years old! So if all will work well, on September 28th, we will be again on the same trail!!! Again, thank for the video. Wishing both of you, all the best with building the farm and the new house!

Thank you so much for watching and also for sharing your story! Amazing you've did Gosaikunda back in 1998 and that you've come back to Nepal so many times and done so many treks over the years. Do you have a favorite amongst all the ones you've done? Must be amazing to have seen the transformation in Nepal over these past 20+ years! AND to be coming back this year with your grandson to trek the same trail it all started with. Sooooo so cool! I look forward to hearing about what you think doing that same trek 2 decades later. Thank you for your well wishes and all the best to you too! Enjoy your return to Nepal this fall and have a great trek with your grandson :)

@@StephThorntonNEPAL Firstly, my apology for the very late response. Also thank you for your kind words. So here is my response....in its long version! I did the 6 treks at different time in my life, and each of them had its own charm! Along that period, I could clearly see the transformation (especially at the remote regions), caused by the inevitable penetration of modernization, and the exposure to the western culture. Is it a good process? maybe for some people - certainly not for me! I am traveling to Nepal, with the naive expectation to view untouched wild nature, as well as meeting various ethnic groups who keeps their original culture and their ancient heritages. Years ago, I was lucky to trek the “lower Mustang” before the jeep "road" from POKHARA up to MUKTINATH has been paved, and some years later to do the “Annapurna Circuit”, before the opening of the jeeps route, from “BESISAHAR” up to “MANANG”!!!!! So where exactly is the fun? Not to mention, the "Upper Mustang 4WD Jeep Tour" from Pokhara up to Lo-Manthang, offered today by Nepali companies as "overland adventure..."!!!! 18 years ago, I was standing at KAGBENI (on my way to Muktinath) looking at the sign stated, "Do not enter.... here starts, the restricted area of "Upper Mustang" ......and was thinking that this will be one of my next treks!!! Among the 6 treks, the Kanchenjunga is no doubt my No.1 - it is a kind of "all in one trek", meaning, it incorporates almost all I could expect: Remote area, off the radar of most trekkers, modest tourist infrastructure, landscape that varies from incredible forests, into the high alpine pastures, dangerous landslides (it took us over an hour to cross such new landslide...), different ethnic groups who keeps their authentic culture. This trek is a tough one! - a lots of up and downs on a non-user friendly terrain....you learn quickly that "altitude difference" doesn't mean much, what really matters is the ratio between "elevation gain and elevation lose"...!!! The remote region of eastern Nepal looks and feel different from the other places I have visited in Nepal, this also includes the amazing tea plantations at Ilam area, on the way to Taplejung. Regarding the coming trek with my grandson, plan has been changed, from Gosaikunda, into Langtang-Gosaikunda-Helambu (11 Days) - starting at Syabrubesi and ending at Sundarijal on Day-11. Why this trek? because: 1. For a relatively short trek of 11days, this is the best and most flexible route I can think of, without being bound to a fix day of flight back ( (Like the case of , Jomsom, Lukla, and Bhadrapur) 2. It comply with most of my expectations 3. Good entry point for my grandson, to get to know Nepal 4. Supporting the people of the Langtang Region who endured the devastating earthquake of 2015 Detailed itinerary has been finalized! Due to tight time framework, we will trek till "Langtang Village" and then back to Lama Hotel reaching “Thulo Syabru” the next day (Day 5 - no matter what!) At Day 6, we will start the Gosaikunda and Helambu trails, reaching Sundarijal and then KAT at Day 11. So, Sep 26th is the day! At that day we will reach Syabrubesi and then.... Jam Jam!!!

Back in 1987, it was my first trek in Nepal: Langtang trek, starting point at that time was Trisuli, and after Langtang the same trek as you did now. Villages are bigger now, but the forest and views are still the same. In the back of my head is a plan brewing to redo the trek next year in October, but starting in Syabrubesi and first do the Taman Heritage Trail. But first I need to lose tons of weigth and get in a reasonable shape before I want to try it.

Wow that’s so cool you were out doing these treks in 1987! And you had to start the Langtang trek all the way in Trisuli! Must have been very different indeed. I do really hope you’re able to make it back out here to repeat the trek 30+ years later, what an amazing experience that would be. And I can’t think of any better motivation to get in shape than to be able to get back out on the trail :) you can do it!

@@StephThorntonNEPAL No snow, beautiful clear skies enabled a brilliant viewing of Everest and Annapurna and a whole bunch of beautiful mountains on the Northern horizon before reaching Gosaikunda lakes. Still quite a few lodges closed last week (late February) so I bashed it out from Shin Gompa to Thadepati where I found a young couple in the midst of getting ready to open up soon. Thankfully they shoved me in a room and fed me a huge pile of dal bhat. 🙏 Much in the way of road works after Gul Bhanjyang has made route finding tricky but the last section from Chisapani South is relaxed and lovely. Namaste Stephanie I just fell in love with you, in a mother /daughter way of course. lol The joy I experienced watching your feet fall on familiar patches of earth, following your footsteps on trails I know only too well, taking in the beautiful fragrance of daphne flowers with you, seeing familiar faces and lodges, and to top it all off hearing you speaking fluent Nepali , has made my morning. I am so dherai khusi lagyo that I stumbled across you. I generally loathe bloggers and videos made of treks as the ego accompanying them is very often higher than the mountains they are walking through. What a refreshing thing to trek with you and see your beautiful happy and relaxed face at peace and ease in your surroundings. The locals must truly love you. I am also so excited as I see I can also go with you through Na Phu Valley....I will return to join you later today. Must have been quite the adventure back in the day before tourism was really set up. Do you have a favorite trek of all that you've done? And wonderful that you are returning in just a few weeks and planning to do Nar Phu! I highly recommend this trek, I found the landscape so stunning and unique to most other regions of Nepal (since I haven't had the chance to visit Upper Dolpo or Mustang yet!) As you might have read, it is a little more logistics with getting the restricted area permit, but I'm sure you're used to all that and have great contacts in Nepal after all these years visiting. Hope you're having a wonderful day and thank you again for your kind words xoxo

@StephThorntonNEPAL
@StephThorntonNEPAL 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for watching :) Just as in any trek in Nepal, I would recommend a good pair of hiking boots, ideally lightweight and at least partially water resistant. I prefer mid-ankle boots, as it is always good to support and protect your ankles on all those uneven surfaces. Since you're very unlikely to encounter rain by October end you could probably do Gosaikunda trek in a good pair of running shoes, since it's not a super long trek, but I still think hiking boots are always the best choice if you have the option - more support, and keep your feet a bit warmer and drier!

I It would be my first time there and I don’t know what kind of trek I can choose. Is it still possible to do a solo trek or having a guide is mandatory now? Dear Giorgio, Thank you so much for watching and for your kind words :) And I'm so happy to hear that you are planning to come trek in Nepal this October! As of this past spring 2023, it is indeed now the rule that you must have a guide with you for all treks in Nepal. I understand their reasoning in many cases, but it is a bit of a bummer for treks like Gosaikunda, which are quite safe to do on your own. I did the trek on my own before this rule was imposed, but alas, not it is the new rule. I would be happy to help you brainstorm possible treks and help you organize your trip if you'd like. Feel free to email me at StephThorntonNepal@gmail.com, and we can continue the conversation there!

Hi Steph, I love your channel, you have great camerawork and it’s lovely to see how well you communicate with the locals. I am hoping to do the trek from Sundarijal to Kyanjin Gompa in April this year. Would you recommend walking north from Sundarijal and taking the bus back from Syabru Besi to Kathmandu, or doing it the other way round? Any advice would be much appreciated. My first plan was to just do the Langthang valley trek but this longer route makes more appeal as I have plenty of time. Thanks!

Hi Brian! Thank you so much for watching and for your kind words :) And that's great that you are doing the Langtang trek this coming spring! I definitely agree - if you have time it is really nice to start or end the trek from Kathmandu. It's really cool to be able to walk all the way from or two Kathmandu, and also great to skip one-way of a long bus ride. As for which way to go, you can definitely do either way. I personally would do the bus up to Syabrubesi, going up Langtang Valley, and then returning back via Gosaikunda and then down to Sundarijal, but that's totally just a personal preference, as I like the idea of getting the bus ride over with first, and then walking all the way back to Kathmandu. It is totally up to you though! The other way around you would be great too. Hope that helps and let me know if you have any other questions!

@@StephThorntonNEPAL thanks very much Stephanie, I think getting the bus trip out of the way first is probably a good idea! I’ve done a bit of hiking in NZ but mostly at sea level, so I’m planning on going quite slowly and spending a few rest days on the way up the valley to acclimatise, as I have plenty of time. That also gives me the option to just go back to Syabrubesi if my Achilles plays up or I don’t feel up the the long hike back to Kathmandu. I’m not planning on getting a guide so I’m just hoping that it isn’t so busy that the tea houses are all full up, but I can sleep pretty much anywhere so I’m sure I’ll be fine. Would you happen to have any expert tips on places to stay in Kathmandu? I’m planning on the tourist hub of Thamel so I can sort it my hiking gear rental, but any hotel recommendations would be lovely if you know any nice places. I hope your farm is going well, I saw the video from when you bought the land, what a fantastic adventure. Many thanks Steph, best wishes and kind regards. Brian

@@briansymmes7917 Hi again Brian! Yes, that sounds like a good plan, as that option indeed provides some flexibility if you decide you want to head back to Kathmandu after coming back from Langtang Valley. And you shouldn't have trouble finding a place to stay in April, there seem to be plenty of hotels these days. I did this trek on my own as well, back on my first trip to Nepal 5 years ago. It's a good one to do solo in my opinion! As for places to stay in Kathmandu... even though Thamel is just this small bubble in Kathmandu, it really is a convenient place to stay when you need to get any gear you need. Also a great place to meet other travelers if that's what you're interested in! There are SO many hotel/hostel options in Thamel with a big range depending on your budget, and I would honestly just trust booking.com ratings to make your choice. I did have two friends that stayed at Yakkety Yak hostel in Thamel and liked it, and Kathmandu Guest House is a nice option if you're okay with spending a bit more. If you want to get out of the tourist bubble, Lazimpat area is a little more of a fun, local area with lots of restaurants, and not toooo far from Thamel, or if you want to try a different part of Kathmandu, you could also find a place to stay near Patan Durbar Square. Thank you for the well wishes with our farm (it is coming along!), and please let me know if you have any other questions!

Hi Stephanie, do you need a permit before entering Shivapuri National Park or you can pay when you arrive there?
@StephThorntonNEPAL
@StephThorntonNEPAL 2 жыл бұрын
Hi! You can pay when you arrive there, no permit needed ahead of time. Be prepared that they might make you take a guide with you, but if you insist you are going all the way through to Chisapani and don't want a guide to go with you, they might let you go just paying the fee.
