Thanks for this. There were some very interesting conversations in this video and also some parts that saddened me. The gentleman wearing the cloth had great knowledge about Shama, I enjoyed what he had to say even though my Fante is not that good. I am also glad he mentioned that Shama is Ahanta. As far as I am aware Saman (Shama) must have been populated by its current people around 700 years ago or more as it is believed the Ahanta travelled along the Pra river with the Fante when they split from the Bono empire. Those who were to later to become the Ahanta eventually separated from the Fante and crossed over the Pra. On the Pra, it is not necessarily the pollution from illegal mining that changes the colour rather the heavy rains cause debris and silt to flow in to and saturate the river. After crossing the Pra so many times I would argue it has always been that colour more or less during the raining season. If you observe the sea you will see the same, debris and silt from the rivers causes the sea along Ghana's coast to be less clear than during the dry season when it turns crystal clear and azure. However there is no argument that the illegal mining and also overuse of chemical fertilisers is causing irreversible damage to water bodies, the sea and forests of Ghana. May I ask before you film do you discuss the questions you ask ? Because I think this is an idea in which you can get to where you want to with the answers. For instance Sao Sebastien or Saint Sebastian, are effectively the same name just one being the Portuguese name and the other English. So the fort would have been called Sao Sebastien beforehand. It is like Sao Antonio or Saint Anthony the fort at Axim. Fort or castle? honestly even I did not know the difference. But after checking I believe a castle is a fortified building. Whilst a fort is a fortified structure that is manned by soldiers. As we know that the europeans where largely fighting amongst themselves for the riches of Africa and thus places such as Sao Sebastien were manned by soldiers we can conclude it is a fort. In regards to the cross out at sea, it is true that even before Diogo D'Azambuja's arrival at Adina there had been europeans traversing parts of the West African coast looking for riches. The probable reason that D'Azambuja's arrival is recognised is because it was under commission of his king and an official expedition for Portugal and not privateers. I don't think that one needs to visit the fort to learn about it, this is something that should be taught in the schools and promoted by other means. Surely if the local people/youth acquire such knowledge they may very well develop an interest and want to visit there regardless of if one has to pay or not. On charging a fee Ghana has to have a better strategy for such things and at the same time we have to be mindful to maintain such things is at cost so where does that revenue come from? One thing Ghana needs to do is create an interest both locally and outside of our heritage and realise that there is benefit in these things. But at the moment there is total apathy. A painful example are the Komaland figurines. Most of these ancient artefacts from Ghana are in private collectors hands, you can even go on to eBay and find that people are selling them in far flung places such as Turkey. I am not gong to explain what the komaland figurines are and why they are significant in the hope you will find out yourself if you dont already know. My point here is if we value the things we have they become valuable, in doing this you will attract others which in turn generates revenue that go towards preserving and maintaining such things. eventually funding for these things can be through entrance fees, or collected indirect i.e. tourism tax or even voluntary contributions. On that point I move on to the last, as a child of Axim I am saddened to hear that the people of Shama are not aware of who Anton Wilhelm Amo was and those who were interviewed suggested they thought he was a european. One thing that this tells me is that they may still have this belief that black Africans have created or done nothing of worth, an example of the mental slavery Bob Marley talked about !!! Amo returned to Ghana as his work was ridiculed and discredited simply because he was a black African. Only now do we see busts and roads created in Germany that pay tribute to him in. So it is very unfortunate that we are to this day, misinformed, ignorant and poorly educated about our identity. Such a change of attitudes is needed if we want to leap in to the future, our ancestors knew this hence, Sankofa !!!!

@@larrym.6495No. Even Cape Coast, Mankessim and other Fante cities and towns were initially occupied by indigenous Guans. Guans and Akans integrated evolving into the present-day Fante (a distinct Akan tribe). Fante evolved over time. Ahanta is Fante just like the many sub-tribes of Fante such as Gomoa, Oguaa, Agona, Edina, Abura, Enyan, Ajumako, Abura, Abeadze, Breman, etc.

Good job but if you want to produce great job in terms of history, you don't consult people who can only tell you stories while scratching their heads .Shama is an old town and it's history is not hidden. Apart from what people can tell you, you could find a lot in print. Abraham got it wrong saying Shama people are Guans.

It may very well be that there were remnants of the Guan people at Shama that became absorbed. After all that it is what happened across the neighbouring central region. The Fante came to the coast at the same time as the Ahanta and as they did they met and in some instances displaced the Guan that were already there. That is why there are still enclaves of Guan settlements along the coast Winneba & Senya Bɛraku being examples
