Look guys, its real simple: Outside of the rules and scoring differences, then BJJ is Judo! When a BJJ person throws someone in BJJ it's Judo and when they submit them with armlocks or strangels (chokes), guess what its STILL Judo! In saying that, theres a whole lot more to BJJ as well, leglocks, ankle locks, head cranks, spider guard, Del a Riva, X gaurd, jumping and pulling guard, no gi...etc but lets face it they are two sides of the same coin largely split by modern day sports rules, politics, practioners ego's and a whole load of internet bullshit. There both great, I do them both and will do until my bones wont work no more!

"Internet bullshit". Yup. It's funny: on the internet a lot of people go on about how BJJ is better than judo, but in the real world when guys I train BJJ with hear that I've trained in judo, they react with only curiosity and admiration. It makes me wonder if the big talkers online aren't basement-dwelling fakers to a man.

yea I mean both have variation that's no doubt. But ultimately they are very close in style and you see a lot of the same moves in each. It's kind of like baseball vs softball (which you see a lot of guys have played both). Both of those sports are pretty similar and if you take away a few rules they are almost identical. I guess also similar would be football and rugby.

@Dirk Diggler Actually, most Judo school now focus on throwing only, and only a few hours a month learn Ne Waza. But in Judo High School, Nanatei or Kodokan Judo, they still learn Newaza. Those people at least at Brownbelt BJJ to Blackbelt BJJ. But reguler Judo School a Blackbelt Judo atleast at BJJ Bluebelt. How many years to take a blue belt in BJJ? 4 years? in 4 years Judo, you had skill of throw above BJJ Blackbelt and Ground at Blue belt. It is not Judo fault but the teacher fault. Koji Komuro and Yuki Nakai fought against BJJ Blackbelt and top tier, and yet they won. Komuro once lose to Marcos Souza, we know he is at top tier BJJ. and Yuki lose to Rickson Gracie, but fought very well against Jean Jacques Machado and defeat De La Riva.

@Dirk Diggler I agree, it should be the 'second half of the throw' to actually secure the top position. But i cant agree that thats standard practice in most Judo clubs where everyone is good at getting to their pin after a throw. Modern day sport Judo is people trying to get the throw at all costs, even if it puts you in a WORST position after youve score ippon. I agree that defeats the point.... but its how I see most people training.

@dansweetnam9098

Branches off the same tree. Judo originally had leg locks, leg takedowns and throws, even neck cranks. Olympic rules make judo teaching focus on throws more on throws. The ippon doesn't exist in bjj so they dont focus much on throws and focus more on the submission than the throw. Judo was called jiu jitsu at the time it was first taught, and when taught to the Gracies the gracies took its name and called it Brazilian jiu jitsu. Around the same time in Japan the art was renamed judo. So originally they were the same art, but the gracies developed the ground game and didn't use ippon in competition and over time its developed in to what it is today. 80% ground game, 20% takedowns. Judo on the other hand allowed win by pin and ippon and was limited in competition by the Olympic committee for injury prevention so over time has lost the ability to spend much time on the ground grappling, and has also been banned from using ,eg takedowns and leg locks. So BJJ and judo were once the same, and the arsenal of tools of each of them is very similar as an art, but competitively the tools in that arsenal are used differently and for both of them, sometimes lost due to not being used in competition. Both have weak points due to these competition rules changing the art... Judo's weak points are leg takedowns, leg submissions, fighting off your back and enough variation and practice at ground work. Luckily BJJ teaches all the lost/banned leg takedowns that used to be taught in judo. They also teach all of the banned leg locks of judo and how to fight off your back in the guard. BJJ's weak points is the arsenal of takedowns and throws and being limited to only a few in comparison to judo or wrestling meaning you will get dominated standing up by judoka or wrestlers, but if you take the fight to the ground there are no rules banning time on the ground or the type of submission your allowed to do. So the original judo was a complete art which taught everything,all throws, all takedowns, and locks of all of the body. The Olympic Judo learnt today is not the full judo created by judo's founder kano jigoro it's a limited version. And the BJJ of today is not the original judo as it has lost the teaching of all the throws, but it has a more advanced ground game than it even had at the beginning. So by training both you will know the entire art of judo (originally called jiu jitsu but a newer style) as Kano jigoro created it to be and probably it will be even better than it was at the beginning. Cross train in both and you will be an ultimate complete fighter as long as you learn striking. It's amazing that it's still possible to learn it as it was intended to be despite the Olympics bans

Thats a good way of thinking of it; because its literally the truth. BJJ was obviously taken from Judo, but focused on the ground aspect, and thats okay if thats what you want to do. Judo was taken from Japanese Jiu Jitsu to focus on the grappling (ground AND standing). I think every style has specialists in some aspect of said style. I just get annoyed at the bjj bros who think their style is the end-all-be-all, and everything else is inferior. We can thank Joe Bro Rogan for pushing that.

I don't understand the excuses you give as to why the BJJ'er lost. You say he lost because he wasn't as big as the judoka? According to the Gracies, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu was developed so that a smaller weaker person can defeat a bigger stronger person. So how come the BJJ practitioner lost here? Was it really because he was smaller? According to Helio's philosophy and development, the BJJ'er should have won this match against the judoka. So how come he didn't? Reality: The BJJ practitioner lost here because he had no formal training in nagewaza and was going up against someone who did.

It's funny because for years jiujitsu's been promoted as the most street effective system of combat. Let's hypothesise what would have happened if this fight were on the streets: well for starters the bjj guy wouldn't have been thrown so much, because he would've been dead after the second waza was applied to him That's why i personally prefer judo. It's groundwork isn't as in depth, but it's not lazy. Whereas a lot of BJJ stsndup i've seen is just plain lazy, two guys shake hands then sit on their arses shuffle around each other until one gets the edge. Now of course this isn't universal, and you shouldn't sacrifice your newaza for tachiwaza if your sport is organised such that newaza is rewarded greater than tachiwaza. But when you claim your art is the best for real life, then you get thrown silly by a sport you claim to have 'evolved from' implying that your art is superior, it doesn't really fit consistantly. Not trying to slag of bjj, it's great and i train it myself and love it. I'm addressing the cultish fanatics i find all over every single martial arts video, regardless of what it is about, claiming everything's bad unless the particular gracie they fettish over gives it enough praise to cause an ejaculation
@jimmyalderson1639
@jimmyalderson1639 6 жыл бұрын
Dirk Diggler yeah it is a shame when you see judoka who can't do newaza. I think it's because most clubs train under competition rules (which are absolute shite) and so they don't do nearly as much newaza as they should. I think if you had some old school judoka like Kashiwazaki facing more old school style jiujitsuka like the Gracies you'd get incredibly fascinating matches, where you get to see the jiujitsu approach to standup as well as the judo approach to groundwork contrasted with the other art's specialty. But alas instead you get a match where the judoka dominates the standup, and the jiujitsuka dominates the ground time (which favours the jiujitsuka because of the rules). I.e. They're not well rounded. It is a shame, and i hope that BJj guys will learn from judo's mistakes and not put too much emphasis on competition; while i simultaneously hope that judoka will speak their minds about the ever changing, ever limiting rules which is crushing the art, and revitalise Nihonden Kodokan Judo
@oreocarlton3343

@jimmyalderson1639
@jimmyalderson1639 6 жыл бұрын
Oreo Carlton i think the opposite for the exact same reasons. Judo does have a ground game, and if you're fortunate enough to notbe at an olympic or competitional directed school where they teach what i'd call 'empty' judo, or even 'fake' judo, then you should know great stand up and good groundwork. Even the founder said you should be equally proficient in both styles if you want to call yourself a master, which is why i began training BJJ. Personally i see the two arts as the same thing - and i think one day they will merge to be the same thing with two different rulesets. But for now i think judo's more complete. I think this because there's no point in being able to RNC everybody in the world, if you get knocked spart out or you get thrown to the ground first. In competitive jiujitsu the effect of being thrown to the floor is just sort of brushed off, but the reason it's an instant win in judo is because it's recognised that you have the power to decide whether or not you can kill or subdue or leave your opponent. Whereas jiujitsu just brushes it off as 'oh well, we're on the ground now' which is not a healthy mindset to have for self defense. But i know most hudo schools aren't as traditional as the one i happen to have been taught at so their groundwork is REALLY bad. But i think (as did the founder of judo) being able to throw your opponent to the ground, or to not get killed while standing, is more a priority than being proficient on the floor. I agree it's massively important, but i think it's underestimated just what a basic osoto gari or right hook can do to your body - and even jiujitsu can't fix that. We do some SD training at the gym i go to and so far it's all consisted of techniques directly handed down from judo. I'm not trying to say judo's better than bjj or anything - but in this particular area, i think judo's more appropriate
@oreocarlton3343
@oreocarlton3343 6 жыл бұрын
jimmy alderson what I tried to say, not knowing ANY groundwork makes your system automatically inferior since groundwork is a reality if you are not koed by punch or slam. Basic Judo newaza deals with Bjj pretty good and Judo guys are generally tuffer and more agressive (similar to catch wrestlers) so your argument stands - culture of BJJ is more about techniques than agression which isnt realistic for self defense but I dont mind that much. There is a certain hostility between Judo and BJJ today but I would like to see them integrated into one in the future.

That's nonsense. BJJ has all of the same techniques as Judo in addition to a wide variety of ground-fighting techniques that developed independent of the Kodokan over the decades. BJJ has a much wider variety of allowable techniques, grips, etc. You *can* make an argument for many sporty BJJ schools neglecting the standup game and I'd agree. But it's not endemic to the entire art. If you want to go that route, I could point to a lot of modern IJF-style schools that teach only the most basic of ne waza in addition to dropping things like below the waist grips due to recent rule changes. Both styles are related, but have diverged to develop their own respective niche. Cross-training is a good idea as always. I'm a BJJ white belt, but I'd love nothing more than to train in Freestyle Judo one day.

Sensei Rich Maybe not fair because the truth hurts but definitely accurate. I'm not arguing that bjj is a force to be reconed with. As far as judo newaza goes they rock. Here's a hypothetical, bare with me. If I were to live let's say Mexico and Judo Joe came down and taught me Judo. Let's say I really took to the newaza like a fish out of water and got really good at it and decided to mostly focus on that. Can I set up shop and legitimately call it Mexican jujutsu, mjj? I can then create a ranking system and my students can shame those that are fake black belts when they themselves are part of a basterdized illigitimate art. Exactly when did it stop being a Japanese art and become Mexican? Because they decided to just do newaza it's theirs? I'd hate to break the news to them but the Japanese did that too, it's called Kosen judo. I know you're trying to be PC but I'm just breaking balls because my argument is solid. You can deny all you want but my question still stands. If you take away all of judo's techniques away from bjj what do you have left?
