I did the same thing back in 2013. I bought a new car. My car was the "base" model that had a key. The "premium" model had push button start. They started having issues with the system not detecting the fobs and the car would randomly not start. People were having their cars towed to the dealership and even they couldn't fix it! I knew that going in so the sales guy kept trying to sell me the "premium" model and using the push button as his main selling point. 🤦♂️😂

@@anonymuswere doubt it... It's hard to learn how to drive a manual when your hands are full of steering wheel and cell phone. By the time Millennials could drive we had keyboard phones. Almost happened to me. My phone detected an airtag and I was able to trace its origin to the gas station I had just left. Guy was in a car beside me acting suspicious. The tag fell off before I could find it. Police were clueless. I immediately put my fob in a Yeti cup which blocks the signal. A few days later, that guy drove by my house and I chased him. He got away but hasn’t returned. The day it was tagged, 15 cars were stolen in a neighboring town using the signal boost method. They target you at gas stations because they know you have enough fuel to get to a drop off point since they can’t restart the vehicle. Most double walled stainless tumblers work great at blocking the signal. No need to spend big bucks.

Kill switches are a lost low-tech antitheft technique. Better yet is a 5 pole relay that diverts cranking voltage to a very loud horn every time they attempt to start because they are uncertain of any switchs
@jacobcarlson401011 күн бұрын
I did a variation of that with my Nissan LEAF; if the kill switch is in the “off” position, and the start button is pressed (regardless of the key fob signal) it’ll act like it started and will show ready to go, but won’t move until the door is closed at which point it blasts a 315db alarm in the 34khz range (too high pitched to be heard) through the speakers, immediately and permanently deafening all within, as well as making them physically ill. And if, by some chance, they manage to drive more than 350’, the high voltage contractors open and create a massive electrical explosion that vaporizes everything within a 30’ radius. If anyone wants to steal that thing, let me grab my lawn chair and a beer so I can enjoy it properly.

There are measures that can be taken make you aware and slow down the attempt. 1. Place a motion detection camera that works off of cellular data in your vehicle one that has great night vision. That way you are alerted on your mobile device of any movement around your car and can speak through the camera if needed from your phone. Once the camera detects motion it will alert you and automatically start recording. This give you time to call the cops. 2. Faraday bags for the fob 3. Buy Carlock security device. Ivest in the Carlock sensors as well and place them on every door. Carlock plugs into the car and will alert you if your car doors are touched or if it senses any vibration or movement it will also GPS track your vehicle in realtime and alert you via cell phone if your engine started. 3. Oh. If your car does not have an alarm get a loud one installed. I say loud because anything over the standard 120 db will surely make the theives run 4. If you can isntall bright flood lights that activate once a person walks up to the door of your vehicle if its in the driveway. You can change the distance sensitivity. To prevent theft install a killswitch.

You need a Faraday box or bag or pouch. Don't rely on just a metal box. Before you do trust a metal box put the key fob in it and take that out to your vehicle in the box. See if the doors will lock or unlock. See if you can start it. If it responded to that fob at all that box is no good! Also be careful when you use something to block the signal since if your key is inside that and you leave it in the vehicle you could lock it in. Normally you can't lock a working fob for your vehicle in accidentally. Just make sure you have your second one ready somewhere you can easily find it just in case you do lock it in accidentally.

Add a hidden switch for the fuel pump, preferably to the ground wire. Flip the switch to disable the fuel pump and no one can drive away with your car.

They need to add the basics in cyber security. Encryption and unique IDs are easily used, im not sure why they haven't bothered.
@EfficientRVer3 ай бұрын
They are used. You don't understand that the thieves just retransmit the signal your own fob is putting out while the fob is in your pocket walking into the grocery store, or hanging on the wall next to the door in your house. It just makes your car think that your fob is next to the car door. All the encryption in the world won't stop that, it's like your fob is right there at the car.

Drive a manual. That'll greatly reduce the chances of your car being stolen.
@russelloppenheimer39703 ай бұрын
The only manual you may be able to find might be so old it has an actual key. So they couldn't steal it anyway.

@@24ecko Maybe in Europe. Not in the USA that much. There are a few manuals in the USA still available in new models but not as many. If you go back to the 1990s, they were very common in the USA.

handy at least on toyotas. if you hold lock and hit unlock twice on the fob it turns it off, so the signal can't be picked up. there's other ways to still get a car but it'd take way longer without the fob signal.
@kl0wnkiller9123 ай бұрын
If you are car savvy, install a manual cut out switch in your car. Hide it where it is not easily found and get in the habit of using it when you leave your car. I also have multiple GPS trackers in my CTS-V.

I just have regular old fashion key and this should be a option for all new cars. I bought RIFD blocking sleeves years ago, sized for credit cards and passports. I would check the passport size to see if it blocked signal, use two to close both openings of card cover. All technology isn't good, people just foister this stuff on us to make money even when it does more harm than good!

I wish pushbutton start and passive key fobs were optional, but for nearly every car on the market now, they are the only choice. That and the abomination of electronic parking brakes!

Hondas have always been a favorite of car thieves. Those clubs won't even slow a professional thief. Many cars steering wheels flex enough and the wheel lock can be slipped off. A can of freon will freeze the club lock and a tap will shatter the lock. All that fails and a bolt cutter can just cut the steering wheel.
@nickwilliams48543 ай бұрын
GEEEZ! Always looking for complicated answers to simple problems. MANUFACTURERS, LISTEN UP! JUST PUT A SIMPLE ON/OFF SWITH ON THE KEY FOB!!! DUH! Whether it's in your house, hand purse,pocket, or wherever you can disable it, and nothing else is needed. The battery will last longer, too. How the hell did nobody think of this?
@tid4183 ай бұрын
They do, at least for some manufacturers. If you're going to do that, though, why not just go back to the old system that is not continuously broadcasting the unlock code just waiting to be brought into close range?
@nickwilliams48543 ай бұрын
@tid418 That's certainly an option, but it doesn't work with push-button starting. Right now, it's get a Faraday box, put the remote far away, etc. Why bother with all of that when you could just shut the remote off?

Here’s a pic of the license plate, the van, the building, the name of the company and says the cross streets where it happened but the owner doesn’t want to be identified. 🤔
@alidycepaisley38293 ай бұрын
That is a little strange. I figure the plate is for a business vehicle and may only point to the business and not the owner. If the business is owned by a holding company or other business, that company will be listed as the owner and the owner's personal name may not be readily available. This will vary from state to state though. Most anything is searchable if you look hard enough.

I remember Ford and Chevrolet cars in the late 1960s to mid-1970s. I could put my fingers between the door and frame and slide them inside until I could pull up the door lock. That was cars that had a back seat but were only two-door cars, having long doors.
@fjb49323 ай бұрын
When i was stationed at Gitmo, Cuba, one of the SeaBees had an old Rambler station wagon. No doors on the front. He'd leave the key in the ignition so other 'Bees could use it to go from the barracks to downtown or the beach. Someone kept or lost the key, so he took the spare and J-B welded it in the ignition. We'd use it and then put a couple gallons of gas back into it, or leave a six pac for the next guy. No one ever "stole" it, hell, you're on Base (Smalltown USA), on an island, surrounded by commie minefields and rusty barbed wire, where're gonna go...? ☆

Toyota calls it a smart key. The push to start feature is optional. There is a way to disable the keyfob, but it is needs to be enabled to unlock and start the car. Don't store your keyfob in the house near where your car is parked

You should always keep your keys shielded, even when shopping, at a restaurant or otherwise away from home. If for no other reason than that a keyfob at the edge of its range can quickly run down your battery in an attempt to gain full communication with it. Plus,of course, a thief can get in with a signal booster. Not sure if they can actually start and drive it with one...

My daughter car is stolen that way on our video. He bent down in front of the car and then he went to the door and he stood there a minute and the door opened and he stole the car Honda made my daughter pay six months payments without a car then they told her, they were receiving a check for some reason they stopped the check and then Honda ruined her credit saying that she missed two payments. When Honda said they were receiving total monies from the insurance. Then they call her up and say we found the car go pick it up. The car was in New York State thank God she has enough sense not to pick it up because the insurance company calls later and says the car is totaled no seats no engine, don’t buy a Honda. My daughter has been buying Honda for 910 years and this is how they treat her lie to her. Tell her to go pick up Total car we’re gonna buy a Buick.

pro tip: ADD a hidden , start switch button, somewhere....meaning this hidden button must be pressed, along with key turn to start or start button. Thieves are usually in a hurry and wont have time to look for a hidden button / switch ....and most likely won't know that you have one. This is nothing new, have been around since the 40s and 50s i think,

Manufacturers have known about he FOB vulnerability for at least 7 years. It was an issue when I bought a new 2017 vehicle. It prompted me to buy a lower model of car that still required a physical key to start it. (FOB only locked/unlocked door). It is EXTREMELY ANNOYING that manufacturers have STILL NOT FIXED IT AFTER 7 YEARS!!!

Use any full metal box with cover to store your keys at home. Toyota owners, you can turn off your key (check your manual). Away from home, use a Farrady pouch. Install a kill switch. Also cover your windshield VIN. Block your OBD2 port.

I'm in the UK and on Halloween a guy with a mask on, paper overalls and gloves walked onto our drive, remotely opened our car and drove it away - ten seconds from start to finish. Later we found out that they had accessed the (password protected) Ford system 10 minutes before the theft and did a master reset (possibly to remove the tracking feature?). The car industry needs to up its game because the Police response here is just to give you a crime number.

Been using a RFID pouch and box for a couple years now. I live in a very safe state and city, but I travel to sewers like Denver and others from time to time and it is very useful there, along with my carry permit and firearm. I don't waste my time, money, nor presence in states or municipalities where permit reciprocity doesn't legally allow my carry for self-defense.
