Wow! You guys are awesome! The ten commandments themselves are divided into two equal parts: the first five are about how we are to treat God; the last five are about how we treat each other as people. The first five deal with spiritual, the last five with earthly. Jesus even said that the greatest commandments are to love the lord . . . and love your neighbour, which harmonizes with the ten commandments. The canvas in the video is divided with the spiritual on the left and the earthly on the right.

One of the things that we must remember about the second commandment is the second half of it: "Thou shalt not bow down to them nor serve them for I, the Lord thy god, am a jealous god . . ." This begs the question: How can the Jews bow down to them and server them, if there are none made? The answer is more simple still. The ancient Hebrews not only had "graven" (man-made) images, but they were even included on the curtains of the Tabernacle and in the Temple in Jerusalem once it was built. This fact is also mentioned in Scripture. Therefore, if you can forgive me speaking for God on this, if I were to have translated the Bible, it would read something more like this: "You shall not make for yourselves any graven image . . . for the sake of bowing down to them and serving them . . ."

God gave Moses instructions on how to make the temple in the wilderness and gave Solomon instructions likewise. They included Angel's. The ark of the covenant had 2 angels. Not for worship.

Legitimate? Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't this stuff supposed to happen in and around Palestine? What do the people native to this area look like? Certainly not blond and blue eyed. Great art, stupid ideas.

When religions migrate, systems of representation change. This is true in many religions. Look at Buddhist representations beyond India for example. The point is often to make the spiritual immediate within one's community. There can be nefarious impulses but that is not, I believe, often primary. Further, its important to be cautious when ascribing modern ideas to pre-modern cultures. These are subtle and complex issues, and not so one-sided.

Smarthistory. art, history, conversation. Thanks, I forget sometimes that more than 40% of US believes in creationism, and one hundred years ago everyone was on the hunt for ghosts. So I think what bothered me is that people now still think this is accurate. People can believe in whatever fairy tale they want.

Indeed, it is very difficult to take absence of our modern views when looking at old art. try to be emphatic and the art will become even more beautifull. And I do not live in the US 😉

Don't be so arrogant and narrow-minded. It's normal for art to use ways of adjusting the historical events to contemporary viewer. Do you also whine about modern versions of Romeo and Julliet or Hamlet?
