When a child comes out (especially a son), it’s always shocking and painful for a parent. I can tell you this as a gay guy who has come out to my parents. And I completely understood that they were scared and shocked at first. Especially in the elite society that they all lived in the TV show. Later in the episode, Lily tells Eric that she was worried for his happiness and scared for his safety. Meaning she was scared that Eric would be turned down by the world for being gay, especially living in a picky environment like the one they lived in.
