Best advice I ever got was to get those motorcycle drop guards. I dropped my new Indian chieftain Darkhorse on the very first day doing slow turns in slow drills, and there was absolutely no damage to my bike. It now gives me the confidence to try more slow speed skills. Can’t recommend them enough.

I agree! I cant recommend them enough either...plus their customer service is awesome. I have talked to Jay the owner about training 3x now and he is always so willing to help and answer all questions. You just dont get that with other companies nowadays.

@@xb5883 ​ I must admit that You ARE right (partially). It is about new big bike owners not knowing how to ride these behemoths. I went from a really small bike in comparison (BMW R1200C) to an Indian Chieftain. It handles MUCH differently at speeds under 5MPH. I'm admittedly a horrible large bike rider at this point, and I'm full of fear that I will scratch this really expensive brand new motorcycle. These bikes are just freakin' heavy. My Indian Chieftain is 895lbs. Expensive = fear of dropping the bike when doing slow speed drills. If you are not trying to do slow speed skills and improve your technique - there's no worry about dropping the bike, you don't need the drop guards. But if you are trying to become proficient at slow speeds, theses guards remove the worry of scraping up that new $35,000 motorcycle and help you get back on that horse and try something slow and stupid all over again.

Spend $35,000 on a bike, jackets, boots and pipes but yet bitch about $350 or so for a product that helps enable them to ride that $35,000 bike proficiently without fear of dropping and damaging it so they can really enjoy riding with skill and confidence. I've been riding since 1968. From the mid-1970s, I got onto a full-sized motor, riding an average of 100 miles a day, 5 days a week, for decades. What I learned back then, you teach today, and I agree that anyone who wants to get their M endorsement should get with your program FIRST. It's time-proven and vital information, and the only thing they need after that is some practice in the cones and riding experience.

I recommend 4 things to students and new riders: 1) Handlebar adjustment/replacement 2) Seat to fit rider 3) Raise / Lower bike to comfortably sit flat-footed 4) Engine/Saddlebag Guards Now I am adding the Motorcycle Drop Guards. Thanks for sharing!

Great tips! Thanks! I have allot of,”Practical” accessories on my 2018 Street glide special. Haven’t done anything to the motor. The next upgrade will be a Wilber’s suspension system. Maybe an oil cooler fan. One accessory that I really like that’s more for a passenger is the Harley,”Cool fan” that directs air away and downwards from the engine. It really helped my wife’s right foot on the passenger seat from engine heat at slow traffic speeds. Great for Florida where we are. One item I bought with my bike was Aux. headlights. Back this past March at Bikeweek I bought custom Dyamics led directionals. When I recently brought my bike in for a service the dealership washed my bike using a pressure washer. The next day while my bike was in the garage I noticed a small puddle of water underneath on the ground where my left side of my directional is off of the aux headlight bracket. Didn’t think anything of it. Well, that LED failed. Custom Dyamics has a lifetime guarantee. I called them. I took pictures of the led. They sent me a new one but a rep from their company called me and sent me a troubleshooting instructions on the fact that water can enter the directional via the mount screw and the mating points between the directional and the aux headlight bracket. The fix is to disassemble the directional from the bracket and use silicone black permitex to seal it. Harleys fix going beyond 2018 ( not mine) was to drill a drain hole in the bottom of the directional cowling. IMHO Harley should have sealed these components and not me having to do that on a five hundred dollar accessory. By the way, when the service dept. at Harley asks,” “Do you want us to wash your bike?” The answer will be,”No thanks!”

I'm ordering my first bike in 30 years tomorrow. A 2023 Harley Heritage with engine and saddlebag guards. Gonna take a refresher beginning rider course in two weeks since it has been a long long time since I have ridden. And I have already been watching my copy of ride like a pro and surviving the mean streets. Can't wait to start practicing. On top of that I literally just ordered the drop guards 30 minutes before seeing this video. Hopefully I can get some good fundamentals back quickly and then come take your course in FL. I'm just trying to do it all the right way.

I have that exact Street Glide ST. Love it! I did a Stage 2 and TAB 4.5" w/Zombies. I purchased your videos Jerry and took a slow riding course locally. I did drop it once during the 5 hour training, which sucks. Everyone dropped "at least" once. Also sucks that I put a few scratches on my new TAB slip-on and the front engine guard. Saddle bags I took off b4 class, until my custom 2 inch diameter guards are ready. Your guys drop guards won't fit, unfortunately. Still need much work on my slow maneuvers, but I did pretty good for my first time doing them.

I just bought my first Harley, 23 Ultra limited FHLTK, best of the best warranty and such they told me that any aftermarket parts will void my warranty and there's a few things I'd like to do. And guess I'd been riding for years also. I didn't know I was doing it wrong.... and I was with a few of your tips it's been so much better. Never dropped a street bike yet plan to keep it that way.

I'd suggest self etching primer after mechanically abrading them. Stainless alone doesn't hold paint well. Stick with one paint make like Rustoleum or VHT for both paints.

Mman , i ran over some loose gravel when turning left onto a curved road . As soon as my back tire went over the gravel, my bike slipped away, causing me to lose control .. Needless to say, i put my left foot down to support the bike as it looked like it was going to fall on me . I ended up getting my left foot raned over by the saddle bag . I didn't break my foot . What did happen was i sprained the shit out of it in almost every way a foot could sprain .With the crash bars in front and on the rear, if I had left my foot on the footboard, would my left leg had gotten crushed by my big Road Glide . Did I do the right thing, or could all the pain and suffering i went through was unnecessary. If i just had left my foot on the footboard. Thank you for sharing your wisdom. Great video as always! I did have a question. I just bought a Road Glide and bought some rear bars for it, but they are 1.25 diameter (not 7/8 like OEM). Knowing that the rear MDGs won’t fit, am I still going to benefit using just the front and primary MDGs?

Jerry. I'm 52 years old and looking at getting a motorcycle. I would be a new rider. Right now, I'm looking at 3 bikes, a Kawasaki Z900RS, a Triumph Bonneville T100, or a Bonneville T120. What do you think of these for a new rider? I'm 6'3", 215 or so. Right now, I'm most interested in the T120. I've considered a used bike also. Triumph offers as accessories in terms of protecting the bike what they call a dresser bar (crash bar), a part called an Engine Protector, Fork Protectors, sump guard, and radiator guard. Are there any other accessories / add-ons that would work for this bike to protect it from damage you could recommend to me? Do you have any plans to have a training center in Central Texas? Would it be feasible for someone who lives in Texas to come and take your course? How much riding experience should someone have before taking your training course? There are 2 places where I live for the MSF Basic Rider course. One is at a Harley dealership and the other is called Total Rider. The Harley course uses a 500cc bike and the Total Rider course a mixed bag of lower cc bikes. I'm leaning toward the Harley course. What do you think? I really want to continue training after the Basic course and become as proficient a rider as possible. I'm thinking of taking the intermediate and advanced MSF courses and any other courses / materials that would help me become a proficient skilled rider Any advice appreciated.

It's kinda funny to me that you need guards on the guard, to save huge money in fixing it, which given the cost of a Harley and it's way over inflated price is not surprising 😂

If you don't want to spend a bunch of money, split shaft collars on the crash bars will protect them from getting scratched-up while practicing. I dropped my bike a bunch of times, not a scratch, not even close.

They won't protect your primary and that's the most expensive part that gets damaged in a drop at speed.

@@motorman857 They keep the bike pretty high off the ground. You'd have to test it to see. In my case, $20 split shaft collars do the trick.

Well in 31 years of had riding I never ever dropped a bike… then I took 23 years off …. And, first day after picking up my new to me used bike… it’s 105F and 90% humidity… and rush hour traffic. I start the 700 mile ride home with 1 hour sleep in two days… I made it 108 miles. Needing a rest pulled in to a hotels portico 😢too tired to go on put the front tire against a curb facing a support column … thinking the bike was in neutral… I shut it off and too soon released the clutch… the dying last rev of the engine propelled the front tire over the curb and near 5 feet up the column only stoping when the back tire stopped by the curb…about a foot away from the base of the column STOPPED progress. The bike the slowly fell to the left with me mounted. It was not scratched or dented as our full combined weight fell on my left forearm… caught on the curb edge… but the flexible armor in my protective shirt jacket …too hot to wear a jacket too… saved me and the bike from any injury. Well hotel staff ran to my assistance as my arm was pinned to the curb with me caught well and good under the bike. Little too trapped, shaken and flummoxed to have been much help myself! The armor worked! But later I caught fire… in a ball of flame destroying the jacket…. don’t tie a large package of paper towels behind you and have it fall off to be shedded when sucked under the back fender and the exhaust ignited it! Maybe should have rethought the bike thing.
