It really is shit Robert never got to meet gendry he likely would’ve adored him. Robert overthrew the Targaryen, and there was still a Targaryen with a better claim to the throne. Since he failed to capture them and bind them to him or the faith or Nights Watch. This would be the best course of action to ensure his claim and that of his children isnt contested. Had Stannis caught them on Dragonstone, murder wouldn't be the only option open to Robert. But s continent away, where she is being courted to a Warlord with 40 thousand men at his back? It's just childish to think she or Viserys wouldn't cross the Narrow Sea with their horde. You also forget, many houses still hold loyalties to the Targaryens. House Martell for one, and the Tyrells would jump at marrying Margery to Viserys if he came over.

Difference between Gendry and Robert is that Gendry is humbled all his life. Has his fathers strength and made a quick friendship with Jon snow like Robert with Ned. And he fights out is survival while Robert for enjoyment . Good qualities that can make a king if proper guidance (with Tyrion)

Ned and Robert were friends for so many years, I hardly doubt that Robert would have gone to war with the only person he always trusted over a boy that was born the the woman he loved more than anything in the world. The whole rebellion was built on a lie and still Ned didn't say a word. Ned also didn't say a word when he learned that Tywin Lanister had the whole Targaryen clan raped and murdered. Where's the difference in beeing part of the evil or beeing evil? He sure wasn't as terrible as almost everybody else, but you can't deny that he wasn't all good either.

I disagree Robert wasn't cruel, he wasn't mad and he wasn't an asshole. He was a shit rule true, but it didn't make him a shit person. People always bring up Elia and her children, like Robert himself killed them. Robert wasn't there he didn't even know until the deed was done. What did people expect from him? to kill Tywin, to arrest him? For what to continue the war? to burn the seven kingdoms beyond the damaged casued by Rhaegar and the Mad King? Robert was a good man, Ned wouldn't have loved him like he did if he wasn't. I can guarantee If Ned had called on Robert to go to war Robert would have responded in a heartbeat. Because Robert loved the brother he chose. He wasn't a perfect man, neither was Ned. But Robert was dealt a shitty hand and he just wasn't good enough to deal with it.

+Yuki Terumi Mostly correct, but when you say that Robert didn't charge Tywin because it would continue a war, he didn't even want to do it in the first place. In one of the Lore entries, Robert says he doesn't blame Tywin for killing the Targaryens at all, citing "it was war!" so Robert agrees with Tywin and thought he did the right thing. During life that was definitely Robert's weakness, the best argument against it was that on his deathbed Robert clearly regretted his actions and feelings towards the Targaryens to the point where he realizes he was wrong and tries to spare Daenerys.

I always find Robert quite a tragic character. He went to war over the woman he loved and the murders of her family members. He never wanted to be king but in his wrath brought down the greatest dynasty the world have ever known. Once his fury had burned out there was an empty throne and he took it but lost his purpose and a lot of his will. He became the most powerful man in Westeros but never fell in love again.
