for thoughts like this you have to learn that you are not your thoughts and the thoughts you are getting are completely normal and so common, when these thoughts come do not desire them to be gone and don’t do something to get them out your head, let them come and notice they are just thoughts do not fight them and they will fade, practice this

One thing that helped me was, when I had an intrusive thought, I would say, "It is just a thought." And then let it go. If you practice it, it helps you stop doing this compulsive behavior.

My intrusive thoughts always seem to be about people/animals around me, especially those whom look up to me or are in some ways vulnerable to or dependent upon me. And that sounds like the experience for many people here: You have a thought about harming/violating someone whom you have the responsibility of loving & protecting. Of course, this intrusive thought phenomenon all sounds “natural” but I know it feels the farthest thing from natural! I’ve been losing sleep over these thoughts and my obsession over them for 3 weeks now. Best of luck to all!

don’t let these thoughts get to you, I think what causes the thought is our greatest fear. For me it’s hurting others with my words, I always wanna be in a position where I uplift others and so my intrusive thoughts are the opposite. For you, those people look up to you, and the exact opposite of what you want, would be hurting them.I feel as though that may be the reason why those intrusive thoughts occur, becuase they’re repulsive, you’d never do it, and it’s something that horrifies you, so don’t let these thoughts get you down, they are worthless and not true. It’s hard to deal with them but I know we can prevail :)

I been having intrusive thoughts since 2017 after a weird negative spiritual and emotional episode. It haunted me for years. I was able to function and still travel and work. This video has been life changing. Really glad this and open conversation in regards to this. I am making the practice of truly understanding why I am having the intrusive thoughts. In fact, it means i really care about something. In my case, my intrusive thoughts show me that I truly care about personal and intimate relationships. I will practice not fearing the thoughts and most importantly not getting rid of them.

Amazing video, thank you. I’ve suffered with anxiety for years, I also found the keto diet increased my anxiety which then increased the severity and frequency of intrusive obsessive thoughts I was having. I’ve spoken about this in therapy, read books and watch amazing videos like this and have found what you put in is what you put out. Healthy lifestyle, healthy diet, not reading and watching negative triggering news, accepting the thoughts will be here and they just flow like water. Don’t fight it, let them be and go on with life and think that you are not trying to banish the thoughts rather manage them and accept that they will be there and the less I interact with them the less severe, frequent and crippling they become.

You may not agree but I have been watching your videos and wrote this down "The more I can learn to accept intrusive thoughts the more I have seen to realise what my Trauma's look like and that it is reactions from years of Trauma. Trauma when my inhibition has become damaged and took a real toll from when my Dad passed at 13 years. It also became damaged from outside allowed influence that had an outer intrusive patterning and that if you adapt to after a number of years it can prolong in your thought pattern and lead to these intrusive thoughts. When you can look at them without judgement I think you can see where they stem from which helps to start to look at and understand why your mind is projecting it." Honing to the present really has helped to hear that and to hear this up, so Thank you Very much.

Wow. I started researching this topic after a coworker asked me “what goes on in your head?” and I immediately answered “nothing.” Ironically, his question got me thinking.. why do so many people seem disturbed or bothered by their own thoughts? I’m 35 years old and I don’t recall having intrusive thoughts, or mistaking thoughts for who I am or what I want, or letting my thoughts dictate how I feel. I’ve always thought (haha) of my mind/thoughts as a tool - just because I pick up a hammer doesn’t mean I’m going to drive a nail. I have a lot to learn from this subject and I feel like it will help me become more tolerant of others, instead of assuming they’re only acting like they’re bothered simply by what is going on in their mind. Wow. Just wow.

My best friends boyfriend commit suicide the end of may by mutilating his body with a knife. He didn’t really have any symptoms that would tell you he’d struggled with mental health. Turns out he was bipolar and suffered severe clinical depression for a long, long time. But after he died I suffered from intrusive thoughts as well. About snapping or losing my mind. I already have anxiety and slight agoraphobia. But you have to just understand that it’s a thought, meet it, shake it’s hand, and know you’re not alone. And it’s not indicative of something bad coming.

For anyone going through tough times and these kind of thoughts in their mind you need to realize life is to live with Happiness.. don't struggle with a problem that you created, if you have created messed up thoughts or a way of thinking you are struggling with..Meditate in your head thinking back and realizing how you were feeling happy and wonderful in your life before this all started and when did your mind started to mess up..the more you want to know and think about why is your life and your brain is not straight the longer you will keep your miserable life alive..so if you hit the rock-bottom there's only one way out that is getting up and get outta there..Meditation is the key for every single problem in your head.Just remember our brain is more powerful than an elephant or a lion...lol

ERP is the single most effective strategy but it was glossed over and equated to the 4 steps which were more about mindfulness strategies with sone philosophies. It was all rather rushed. To equate ERP with the 4 steps is a generalisation as in many cases the exposure protocol is fairly direct but leads to very helpful outcomes.

I don't pay attention to the thoughts as I know it can just make them worse and more frequent. I see a therapist and I meditate everyday once in the morning and once at night. I've also been on antidepressants for a month now for my anxiety/depression. I don't do any compulsions to make these thoughts appear or dissappear i just let the thoughts be. Any idea what this is. Is it related to my anxiety or depression?

Good luck with everything and know that even if it is overwhelming, you will get through this in the end.

One small trick, that may make it LESS SCARY....& eventually lessen them.....is to see the INTRUSIVE thought as a cartoon w/ silly characters & voices as high pitched girly or like Donald Duck........it gives YOU CONTROL atleast of part of the thought....Also, YOU ARE NOT your THOUGHTS ......they are like Clouds....You are MUCH Bigger you are the WHOLE SKY!!........ DONT try to STOP them.....let them float by like clouds do, tell yourself... I see you, but you have no value in my life.....your subconscious picks up it as not important......( Eckhart Tolle, Spiritual teacher teachers HOW to handle these mind games❤️🙏) ....good Luck...........

For a relaxed life sit on a chair, back straight, eyes closed, be as still as possible and observe the sensations of your incoming--outgoing breath at the entrance of the nostrils for around 5-10-15 minutes or more. Don’t fight your thoughts. Slowly the mind will relax. No deep breathing needed. Day or night before sleep sit or lie down and observe your breath. Like me, make this a lifetime daily habit to have a good life. Avoid constipation as it affects the mind instantly. Best wishes Shyaaam Sir. -Counsellor.

Tip #7 Is actually damaging to those with PTSD and OCD/IT. Triggers trauma response. Why do so many professionals not understand this and not only perpetuate pain but cause new pain? Need bottom up approach. Please make this clear so you don’t cause more problems. The ability to do CBT is just not there for many of those with PTSD, until they feel safe enough to process cognitively.

Its part of exposure therapy.Different things can trigger different people. If you found something triggering, discuss with your therapist and have a open conversation about what has triggered you in the past as well. There are so many coping skills and therapy styles. You just have to find the one that works for you. Exposure therapy is really helpful for some. He even said in the video if something doesn't help you, move on to something else.

It’s not damaging though is it. When you are so convinced of something and are trying to find an answer which you realistically can’t get then simply acknowledging that you may never know or that what you fear could be true is the only way of dealing with it. It’s either that or spend the rest of your life trying to find an answer. I’d rather accept uncertainty and be comfortable with that than keep fighting.

Agree.... acceptance and willingness are the ways...... do nothing is better than do something of trying to resolve something.

My brain got bored of violent intrusive thoughts. Then it kinda personalised the intrusive thoughts towards what really distresses me and makes me avoid certain people. I imagine myself stabing myself as a way to get anger and distress out from that intrusive thought. Now I hate that one person most of the time and I live with them everyday so i can't just keep avoiding them. (They also really annoyed me to begin with-but the intrusive thought made it much worse..) What should I do?

for thoughts like this you have to learn that you are not your thoughts and the thoughts you are getting are completely normal and so common, when these thoughts come do not desire them to be gone and don’t do something to get them out your head, let them come and notice they are just thoughts do not fight them and they will fade do not fear them, practice this

I never really questioned my thoughts until someone made me notice I wasn't as innocent as I thought. But the hardest part for me is the bible says even our thoughts are sins so that is why I have a hard time dealing with it now more than ever. Can doctor speak to this topic and how it relates to the bible?

I had a similar experience of obsessing over the moral worth of my thoughts. Taking every thought captive, compulsively praying, and feeling like intrusive thoughts were from Satan. Jesus says that lust and hatred are the equivalent to adultery and murder, which can lead us to worry about any lustful or hateful thought. Worrying about having these thoughts can create more of them. There’s also the verse about the heart being deceitful above all things. I’d say practice more in the area of reducing fear/anxiety, and understand that thoughts don’t have to lead to actions.

Not worth it man, hang in there , I have been there and end up living a long life full of good and not so good, joys and sadness , love and abuse, but it was all worth fighting for my self. Take the meds, talk your brains out do what it takes, what ever it takes. You are worth it but your not going to know that until you try a few time and not give up.
