For the record, MVL, Giri and Dominguez can still reach 20 points by winning the 3rd round. One of them winning and Nakamura losing in the semis - would lead to a 3-fold tie between them and Rapport.
@khfghmfgj2 жыл бұрын
then number of points in classical games would be the tie-break and everything could happen (there is a chance that this classical win today will be crucial for the final standings). but the chances of Rapport qualifying are very high and actually he can be sure of his spot in the candidates already after the group phase of the third Grand Prix (Nakamura and at least one from the following trio: Giri, MVL, Dominguez have to win their groups)
@adamfenyves39722 жыл бұрын
@@khfghmfgj hehe, seems like I'm not the only one calculating all this since the game ended 😂 And yes, Aronian or Andreikin could have 20 points by being the runner up of the third event, but then they'd fall behind Rapport due to less 1st spots on the grand prix. I know they set up the group pairings ahead of time, but they didn't have to do that! Andreikin's only here because Ding Liren had to drop out, so clearly, people are ok with the level of opponent planning they'd need if they got a different pairing than they were expecting. Wityh game 1, there were factors off the board that encouraged Andreikin to play for a draw. His family were flying to from Russia to Belgrade, but a bomb threat was made against the plane (context: flying into Serbia is one of the very few ways for Russians to get to Europe right now) and the plane landed seven hours late, so Andreikin basically had no sleep before game 1. So it makes sense for him to basically punt his first game as white, because of the extremely disrupted preparation. Chess24 has a report on this.

Though it over, and there is ONE scenarios in which three players tie at twenty points apiece, and ONE scenario where Hikaru wins the Grand Prix and Rapport and another player tie at 20, and these three scenarios are the ONLY outcomes in which Rapport isn’t guaranteed to go to candidates. SCENARIO #1 1. Giri, MVL, or Dominguez MUST win the Third Leg in Berlin, scoring 13 points. 2. Hikaru MUST win group A, advance, and then lose in the semi final. This will give a three way tie between Rapport, Hikaru, and whoever currently has 7 points. SCENARIO 2: 1. Hikaru must win group A, win the semi final, and then lose in the final, scoring 23 points overall. 2. Giri, MVL, or Dominguez again must win the final leg and defeat Hikaru in the final in Berlin. This results in Hikaru winning the grand prix, and a second place tie between Rapport and either Giri, MVL, or Dominguez. Is Rapport guaranteed? No. Are his chances high to qualify? Absolutely. Giri, Dominguez and MVL know this. They know that one of them must win this final stage to have a shot at the candidates and they’ve done these calculations. Expect big things from them. At it’s core: if neither Giri, MVL, or Dominguez win the final leg in Berlin, Rapport is guaranteed a Candidates spot, and Hikaru is guaranteed candidates if he makes it to the final.
@norberthips26102 жыл бұрын
Your scenario two isn't true, because if Levon or Dimitry lost in the final, they will have 20 points, but they didn't win a grand prix, which is the first tiebreak.
