Magnus gets frustrated by these stilly questions quite a bit, I am sure he got a kick out of seeing another great, especially one so respectful as Vishy, point out how silly it is to ask a competitor what amounts to "You lost by being outplayed. How will you win next time?". There's really no better response than the one Vishy gave. Next time you try and outplay them instead.

That Ivan Sokolov quote hits different when you've experienced OTB throws firsthand. I had an OTB game against someone rated nearly 500 points higher than me where I had forced mate and I knew I had it. I wasn't having a great tournament and this was the last game and would've ended things on the highest of high notes. But up 10 minutes to my opponent's 10 seconds, I inexplicably blundered into mate myself. I had never been so beside myself. For the first time in my life, I thought to myself "God, I need a smoke/drink." I remember texting that quote to my roommate before I went to bed that night. That game was 6 months ago and will never not haunt me.

For real. Once i was in first place against some 30 people and up a Queen for a rock against the second seed who was an older man with a much higher rating than mine. The guy went for a kind of foretress and won on time and I just couldnt recover from that and the tournament went all downhill from there

Ouch. Well, on the plus side, sometimes you win those kind of games. I had black against someone of similar strength to me in a pretty lively middlegame. I managed to win a pawn and literally blunder two pawns immediately afterwards. My opponent was one of those guys who struggles and strains with almost every move and, although he had me going backwards, he started to press, thinking that because he was ahead in material, he should be winning for sure. The stress of trying to win a better position got to him and he hung his queen.

Hans maybe felt bad after playing the masterpiece that crushed Magnus, so he gave up the "luck" to try out his own luck and then lost every game. Then he knew he didn't have it yet. He was desperate and felt very depressed. In that state of mind he reached back for the powers of the forbidden "luck." We will see how often he partakes of these powers. Magnus will certainly avoid playing him, and it seems he is indeed saving it mostly for beating the GOAT.

hey levy chess. i think a video on borislav ivanov would be interesting. caruana spoke about him in an interview released yesterday and his story is pretty funny, basically he was suspected of using electronic cheating devices, over 20 grandmasters and ims signed a petition saying they would not play in tournaments with him present. he ended up getting banned and stripped of his title. it might be interesting to go through his games and see why people so heavily suspected him of cheating

They suspected him of cheating because he refused multiple times to be searched, stopped one and withdrew from a tournament, didn't appear for a lie detector test and demanded to be notified 15 days in advance if such measures were in place and his lawyer should have been there too. He his now accused of participating in a passport forgery ring in Bulgaria. I'd say it's pretty sure he was cheating.
