Nah, Levy's right, the bots have always blundered in unnatural ways, going back 30 years. And the mental intuitions against very weak human players like "this fucking dunce doesn't see the rook fork" doesn't quite work against the bots, either. They'll see the rook fork and then let a threatening, obvious pawn take their queen.

Right. It's hard to program a bot to play consistently in keeping with a particular skill level. So you get this weird mix of excellent bot play and then wild blunders out nowhere to make it more beatable. Kinda reminds me of racing game rubberband AI: perfect line for several laps and then inexplicable crash so you win. Or drive super slow so you take the lead, then pursue you like a demon in to the finish (naturally crushing fastest lap for the race) so it's a split second outcome.

At a certain level, the bots don't play so weird. I've been playing Isabel (1600) and she plays well, her moves make sense, and her mistakes are realistic. The advantage of bots is that they don't resign. You have to check mate to win. And they don't have emotions, which means they don't relax in winning positions, and don't play like they've given up when losing. I play Wally sometimes, but he kicks my but, haha

Take advantage of that by bringing your knight out to attack his queen. If you go e4 he responds with e5 then defend your pawn with the queenside knight. I don't know how to analyze Chess at all, so telling someone with an ELO that can't get over 450 to analyze games just doesn't help. Your videos, however, are the exact thing I've been looking for. You explain your moves and explain WHY they're good. You're able to contextualize moves in ways that I can identify in my own games and I've been able to apply the same principals. Oddly enough I have started to find when Stockfish 11 calls my moves wrong in my game analyses.

Speaking of ironic detachment, I have a hobby of naming my tourneys on chess.com with glib titles. But no one has yet joined my latest one, which I posted a couple days ago, and it's making me feel insecure. "Too soon?"... (INB4 someone swoops in with a 'cool story bro'.......)

Alright alright, maybe I didn't actually know the correct definition of glib when I posted. Which, having looked it up now, is sorta ironic... unless I also don't actually know what ironic means. O_o

Funny to go back and watch Levy's old videos during the chess boom with the pandemic and queens gambit netflix show and see how calm, instructive, and diplomatic he is. Nowadays he holds back no punches "that's a terrible move. What a bad game of chess. I lost years off my life"
