DEADLINE to ENTER is TONIGHT 09/27/2024 @ 11:59 PM PST
Today I decided to do a Gothic Serpent memorial 2-gun match, using my Shughart M14 clone and a surplussed Delta 1911. This was a 5-stage match at the Rio Salado Sportsman's Club, and it was a complete dumpster fire for me. I don't know what changed, but the reliable-in-testing M1A became a complete malfunction machine on the clock. I had trouble with the 1911 as well, also for the first time. Together, this landed me in dead last place...but at least I looked good doing it, I suppose?

It is only the last few years I have heard what a failure the M14 was/is. In fact a co worker used M14 as a DMR in Iraq then again a coule years later in Afganistan. He siad he preferred the M14 much more reliable than the M16/M4 and yes he was infantery and seen plenty of combat.

My M14 seems to be very reliant on lubricant. I am guessing your rifle is underlubed, or you're using the incorrect lube for the hot climate. Also with you being a lefty, there is a good chance your hand is making contact with the op rod which would cause a malfunction.

That is one of the older NM pistols fielded by the Unit in the 80s. By 91/92 they were running long in the tooth and got replaced by custom pistols that relied heavily on Caspian Arms parts. If I'm reading this correctly, Delta 1911s were made to be "match grade". Which is bad. Very bad for a combat pistol. Match grade means accuracy and light triggers are prioritized over pretty much everything else. This directly impacts a 1911s reliability in a big way. The standard issue M1911A1 government model is best for reliability by far.

It's not high speed video so it's impossible to say, but it definitely looked like the op rod never even moved when it was malfunctioning. Given the nature of the design, and how "easily" the malfunction was rectified each time... I wouldn't even hazard a guess without feeling it myself and taking it down for a parts check. Same with the 1911 except for the "easy rectification" part, that sucker looked hung up hard a few times. Why? Too many reasons are possible to armchair this one. Hell, the one trouble 1911 I ever dealt with, an RIA 1911A2, boiled down to a strange little one-off production issue that I never would have guessed in a million years without the thing in pieces in front of me; the trigger bar had the slightest little bur on one side and dragged JUST enough to not reset, but would pop out the moment the pistol was manipulated for any sort of jam check and hence the problem disappeared. I finally stripped it to the frame and was still puzzled until I saw a shiny spot on the edge of the bar the size of a grain of sand, and filed it down. Just a leftover from stamping...

I use my M1a clone. On the Windigos, Shape shifters and Greylings that predate my calves on my ranch. I love the nostalgia and utilitie. But my Armalite pattern AR 10s work the best in cattle defense.

lol i hated backpedal matches when i did IPSC. "back. back. back. back. BACK. BACK. BACK!!" and constantly bumping into the deaf RO who couldn't hear me screaming BACK while i was backpedaling. i always liked the more creative IPSC matches that required you to lay on your belly and shoot under a hard target or had more than one way of running the course

Hi Ian, love that you show'd your shitty malfy run. Hopefully the glitches have simple fixes. Great movie. Great CosPlay! 🤠🍸

"By the time I was done with the match, I was so frustrated that I didn't even want to bother to figure it out." This has been my own personal experience with this platform in operational conditions in the real world. I did a few foot patrols with honest-to-goodness M-14s as unit DMR rifles during OEF in 2005-2006 and 2007-2008. Previous to that, my personally owned M1A Scout I had problems that made me want to throw it in the woods. Either way, IRL patrols and having one of my own switched me off to the platform as a whole. Accurate and fun when fed good quality ammo and they don't malf on you, however they are really prone to becoming expensive paperweights.

5:47 bro, WHAT! i did IPSC for years, and i NEVER saw a course that had me that close to the 180. i would have flat out refused to run that course! that's insane. i've seen some goofy courses, but never one that had me turn 179.9999 degrees. the worst i could think of are the dumb backpedal courses or having to backpedal to avoid breaking the 180 because i missed something that was now behind me

Sadly I can't, Ian...sadly I can't. I'd love to take part in the raffle for that nice gun...I've always loved the battle rifles, why? Because I play video-games and I prefer slow and accurate guns over spray and pray things like say a full auto M14 (ouch, you'd most likely be better of throwing the rifle at the enemy than engage in full auto!)...why can't I take part? Well, I happen to be German (so bad gun-laws and also I am not in the US, so yeah shipping would be a problem etc.)

I've shot my 1911 in IPSC comps and the magazine I've had the most problems was a Wilson 8rnd, it looks great, slides in and drops smooth, but often it wouldnt hold open and other issues, I've started using mostly Chip McCornick mags after that with zero issues or Mecgars, could be that potentially or excessive/not enough lube on the points, or even a worn recoil spring if the gun is an old surplus.

I dont know about m14. But in an AR all these malfunctions tend to be either overgassing or improperly annealing of the brass. Not the only explanation but these can be common causes.

I was trying to think of what could be wrong with the rifle. I am not sure. I was thinking the faux auto-sear was bumping around from recoil and getting in the way, but that does not explain the stuck cases. Maybe there are two problems at the same time? 1911 does seem to be two problems at the same time. A few times it did not fire, you gripped it slightly different after trying to figure it out and it worked. So grip safety issue. Maybe that flat spring is new and a bit too stiff? Not sure about the feeding issues. Seems to be magazine related, but for all the mags? Just does not like that brand of mag? Some older guns can be annoying, haha

I am firmly convinced that certain guns have match detectors built into them. They'll work great during practice, but the moment you get them out to a match they start puking. The corollary to that, of course, is that if they work flawlessly at the match, you can pretty much bet the farm they'll work great anywhere else.

I was very enthusiastic about my new Socom 16 despite the fitting issues on a brand new gun, extremely heavy safety, other "minor" things like impossible to zero it with scope because of incorrectly fitted scope mount from factory and almost running out of corrections when zeroing iron sights. I still admired the ergonomics and looks of it, so one by one I remedied everything and after all of this, the rifle just refused to group with anything I fed to it. Blessed are Mr. Stoner and monsieur Saive I am happy with their creations

Were the rifle cartridges handloaded? My experience with my M1A is that any more than two reloads and the cases become stuck or short cycle. Additionally, hotter rounds will cause the case to become stuck and not extract. too. One more thing to consider is if the "band" that the gas plug cap screws into might need to be turned one more time around the barrel for the gas port to fully align....

ROFL, I love Ian and this show and all his content. He probably has the single coolest job in the world imo. I have 4 of those coffee mugs from 4 of these enter to win rifles. But It's nice to see that even a guy who appears to have it all going for him can have a rough time too sometimes. Rifle problem, pistol issues and then said f it and gave himself (I am very sure) a serious stomach issue for a few days.

This might sound ridiculous, but: is there any chance that the laser mounting clamp on the gas block is clamping just enough to make the piston drag a little?

None of the readers of my comment will believe me, but SARCO makes outstanding M1911 magazines for a small amount of money. I have yet to have any malfunctions with mine in any of my 1911s. Believe what you want.

I'm just spitballing here, I'm no expert on M14's, but the malfunctions seemed to be a repeatable pattern. Each shot of the mortar clearing is somewhere past half mag. Maybe there is an issue with the feed ramp combined with some small deficiency in the magazine?
