I think that younger audiences need proper friendships and parenting to steer them to what is and isn't acceptable in their own life (verses what's allowed in a book) but I understand your frustration regarding sexualized fanfic in general. The real problem people seem to have, in my mind, is not the content itself but that the content is so unbelievably popular. So called toxic men have always and will always draw the attention of women and girls for any number of reasons so this isn't anything new. Ofc kids read this and ofc middle aged white women do. Probably on a 50/50 split. When these fics go into taboo and f*ed up fantasy, it STILL draws people in because others rant against it. Now it's forbidden. Its wrong. Thats why people find this stuff. But that it exists is not up to anyone, that's the free market at work. That's female desire and curiosity on display - reading about nice boys and playing by the rules isn't edgy. I can also say why stuff like this IS so popular and it's precisely because adults find it offensive. Now the middle aged women that write it and also consume it? Yeah, I have no words lol.

Offering my opinion as a middle-aged American white woman, I think works like this are simply products of our sexual repression. We've definitely made strides since the 50s, but there's still very much a double-standard around the narrative of white-girl "purity" (which ultimately turns into white-girl "chastity", but that's a conversation for another comment section) versus how you are expected to be seen by men; sexy, but not sexual. The horrid gaslighting of young girls with "if he teases/hurts you, it's because he likes you!" ties directly into this idea as well, and keeps women believing that if he's emotionally abusive, manipulative, or unavailable (or god forbid physically so), it just means he's into you, and you just gotta break that icy external demeanor to get to the ooey-gooey "I'm just misunderstood" fuckboy center. I think that really drives the popularity of these over-the-top "romances" that are just thinly-veiled abuse stories, and it honestly makes me feel bad for the women writing them, because for many of them, this isn't even the best that they have in life, this is the fantasy that they hope for; mediocre vanilla sex from a manipulative control-freak who at the very least doesn't beat them. It's deeply saddening. (I specify white purity culture because that's the sphere of influence I grew up in, I know women of color face their own challenges with purity culture and overt sexualization, but I don't have the authority to speak on that.)

Her name is Corvina? Adorable, I hope the author enjoyed Wednesday on Netflix. I would also have loved this story as a pre-teen before I knew how predatory and vile teachers, that are into their students are. I wish, I could recommend this book to young people in their emo/dark library phase, but since it sets up their readers for failure, romanticises abuse and power imbalance in relationships, I wont be doing it.

Came here right after reading this horrible book and I agree on all fronts, especially the part about the mc getting aged up to take care of the age gap. There is this one point where they bring up this special full moon that happens every five years, and will be happening this year. In the same breath Corvina, who just turned 22, says she was born under this moon. I assumed that the author had aged her up a couple years (explaining why she was older than everyone else), but, thinking about what you said as well as her own behaviors, I could easily see her being 15 in an early draft.

Bonus points if the romance is paranormal or dark in some way. The cringe factor of this book is just so aggressive. I cant get into it.
