Can someone tell me why it’s called Philadelphia? I’m an american studying conducting in Austria, Switzerland, and Germany and I’d like to know how this piece was composed, or what influenced it rather. I can’t find much info online. Edit: Franz Welser-Möst recorded it with the Wiener Phil. Is there a booklet in the CD? I don’t really buy physical CDs anymore (sadly), but I will if there’s a booklet with info in it.

I believe it was commissioned by and written for the Philadelphia Orchestra. Von Einem, particularly in his earliest works, was heavily influenced by American jazz, and he listed Duke Ellington as an influence. There are hints of jazz in this symphony, particularly in the final movement.

@@wishingonthemoon1 I read that Eugene Ormandy commissioned it, but there was then some controversy, which I can find nothing about online. It was thus premiered in 1961 in Europe, where it was also met with controversy, because the audience was expecting a "modern" work. That may have been Philadelphia's problem with it t. American symphonies were notorious for rejecting works they had commissioned from acclaimed composers. The New Orleans symphony refused to play Milhaud's "Music For New Orleans" which they had commissioned from him in 1966. They claimed the work was "terrible." I don't find it "terrible," but it is dry and fairly abstract, as was much of Milhaud's music after about 1956.

Well, he wrote what he wished, and surprisingly I can always identify von Einem when I hear his music. In that respect an original. That says something.
