Also, there are metallic watercolors and gouache! I use primarily watercolors for painting and have been looking into painting minis (as I got a board game with minis in it for Christmas). There are many different brands for metallic watercolors. The brand I use is Komorebi. A lot of people like the Coliro (I think that’s how it’s spelled), but they can’t get quite as opaque as the Komorebi from my experience. Since the Komorebi metallic watercolors can be quite transparent or quite opaque, I highly recommend them. The set I have includes a silver, white gold, antique gold, copper, rose gold, and bronze.

I really like the transparency, and ability to push, pull, and remove the colors until you get what you want. Seems like a really forgiving way to practice mini painting. Also, I just recently discovered that jetpens sells metallic and pearlescent watercolors that come in little palette sets. They are a bit spendy but might be worth trying out. I bet mica powder pigments would work nicely too, blended into a guache wash.

Came here from Bill’s channel, and since I’m usually a watercolourist (and gouachist?) and have a gigantic stock of them, I’m glad to see someone trying them on minis. I haven’t tried since having bad luck on a first attempt over a watercolour ground, but I keep meaning to try again. I’m really enjoying the humour of your vids and really envying your paint racks. 😄

I'm primarily a gouache painter who wants to get into painting minis, but I hate using acrylic so I was hoping I could use something else. This is really promising, so I want to try it! All the things you described as "weird" or needing to get used to are already parts of painting that I'm used to, so perhaps it'll be fine.

As someone who lives in a flat with no garden and a partner with asthma I'm very excited to try the wash method at some point (white spirit and enclosed spaces do not mix well, so oil paints can't be played with until we move somewhere where I can do it outside or in a shed). Will need to wait quite some time before I can justify purchasing yet another set of paints but I can definitely see potential :)

You can paint with oils without toxins: using just linseed oil or walnut oil or similat non-toxic thing as paint thinner. Smelly as oil, but not toxic to my knowledge. Have to sacrifice work speed and some painting durability stuff and such tho.

What are water color grounds?
@ianstewart8735
@ianstewart8735 3 жыл бұрын
@@CCMinis they are a lot like gesso in acrylic but for watercolor. They allow you to paint watercolors on non water color surfaces. For instance you can put water color grounds on glass or metal and use normal water color techniques. It's pretty cool stuff.
@aatashiwadoremi
@aatashiwadoremi 2 жыл бұрын
An example is the Daniel Smith watercolor ground, but that is so thick that I’d not want to use it on a miniature in worry that all the details would be lost. Instead, I would suggest a spray type of base, such as Mr. Super Clear (the UV cut one is especially nice), which is commonly used in painting dolls and other kinds of toys and collector’s items. The spray is quite toxic though, so it’s recommended to spray outside and to wear a good respirator mask, not a normal N95 or cloth mask. If you want to see examples of how it works, I’d recommend checking out Dollightful’s channel. She has a great beginner’s guide which showcases it. Or you could check out any video of her’s and watch the segments where she is painting and drawing the face. (She mostly uses watercolor pencils, but will sometimes finish with acrylic paints or gouache, though I’d say gouache and watercolor work just as well). Hope this helps!

It creates a look similar to pieces that are primarily done in contrast paints, but with the benefit of more easily being able to remove the layers similar to oils. You do trade off some of the color saturation and natural flow quality of a contrast paint though, and the lasting blendability of oils without removing much paint. So it could have a niche falling right in-between oil washes and contrast paints.

I inadvertently grabbed gouache at the store. Like reaching in a bag for a blue pen and pulling out a black one. I had to look up what it was at home. But I started painting a mini with it and I loved it. I'm not great with making acrylic look the way I want it to look, but I got really excited when I had made some progress with the gouache. It's good to know I can seal in the layers.

Hello, I'm a newbie in this and have a question. How can you paint the whole model with watercolor, since the model's material is hydrophobic and not absorbent? I tried painting with watercolor and the paint merely beads up on the surface. Awesome video, btw.
@CCMinis
@CCMinis 2 жыл бұрын
Make sure the undercoat is very matte, so it has enough tooth for the paint to cling onto, and make sure you do not have too much paint on your brush. If the surface is matte any beading is likely due to having the paint flow off of the brush too quickly - to combat that I dab my brush on a paper towel before application and wait for the previous layer to be completely dry

Would you say that these differ in any other way than smell from oil washes? I mean, is there anything they actually do better? Or do they work the same, just with another medium (water instead of white spirit)?
@CCMinis

They aren't better or worse then oil washes, just different. They flow differently if that makes sense - there is a bit more surface tension than working with oils.

Growing up in Portugal in the 80s, gouache was the default paint for kids... Even later on in high school it's what we used when learning colour theory in art class. It's cheap, washable and has better coverage than regular watercolour (the other paints kids used). I'm always confused when people don't know what it is...

Hi! First of all your videos are a great inspiration. Usually I'm watching/listening while crafting something. I'm in love with the gouache especially washes and glad that I originally stumbled on your video related to the topic. Gouache changed my life. I have a small question how do you seal the layers if using multiple washes? In the video you used a brush and some varnish? I have used brush and some acrylic waterproof lacquer for that. But for more complicated builds I've been thinking is there any varnish/lacquer that could be applied with airbrush to seal the wash before adding a possible second layer?

I want to be completely clear and on the record that CC Minis does not, and never has, promoted the use of necromancy, or any of its subsequent magical alignments

The background music is way too loud. It’s hard to hear what you’re saying

I could not finish the video because it was very hard to distinguish your voice from the hectic music.

This looks like a truly interesting video. I unfortunately have not been able to understand almost anything. The level of voice is behind all those annoying sound effects and unnecessary music. Try to better balance sound levels.

Thanks for the feedback. I'm self taught and audio is something I am working on. Unfortunately there is no way to go back and update the audio tracks. In my more recent videos the levels are not as much of an issue. Take care
