Ah the great old memories. Never been a supporter of either of these teams but as a kid and cricket lover i always used to eagerly wait for English summer cricket. Most test series and matches used to start on Thursdays and as school got closed for weekend after Thursday I was very excited. Didn't have internet or mobile back then but just those ads on ESPN and Star Sports informing about all the upcoming events. Life was simple then. N.B. this scorecard was also one of my most favorites.

The problem with England's performances in the late 90's was not that they couldn't win matches - they could. But as the 1998 summary very aptly says: "England are occasionally brilliant but often fall short of the standard required." England had 3 consistent players - Thorpe for batting and Thorpe alone consistently for batting with sporadic performances from Stewart, Atherton, Butcher and Hussain. Then you had Caddick and Gough for bowling. The batting just wasn't sufficient to be a good team on the world stage. The bowling was too centralised around 2 good bowlers too. Edit: It should be noted that this match included Vaughan and Trescothick. Two players who really added some class to England's batting and this helped them transition from bad to passable with further changes made by 2005 to allow them to finally be able to viably compete with the likes of Australia. (See Ashes series of 2005)

No, he wasn't 😮. He'd played a vital, match turning, innings against West Indies in 2000 at Headingley; a match winning contribution in that albeit Cronje influenced win in South Africa. When he came into bat on his debut in South Africa in '99, England were 2 - 4 against Donald and Pollock and he scored 33 (probably worth 3 times as much). And he made a 100 in the next match after this one.

Superb catching and batting by Thorpe and Stewart. I really miss Darren Gough. He could destroy a tail like nobody else with his yorkers. On paper, the Pakistan team looked formidable - Waqar Younis, Wasim Akram, Inzamam-ul-Haq, Shaoib Akhtar, Abdul Razzaq. The bowlers should have run through England easily, and on a good day they would have done. They obviously weren't at their best. Still, a very good win by England.

A great test for England. For a period of about two years their opening pair of Gough and Caddick finally clicked after all the disappointments and terrible player management in the 90s. I note with interest that the relatively modest pairing of Gough-Caddick outbowled their objectively superior albeit ageing counterparts in Wasim-Waqar on this particular occasion. The lesson being... you play the ball, never the reputation of the man delivering it!
