Terrific methodology (real world) testing and relatively subjective, results oriented approach to choosing the best one to put Your name on! Also loved that your original held up maybe second or third best overall! It's amazing how what is now called PVD (sputtering from my era in cryogenics) has grown almost as much as material/metal sciences. What I appreciate most about you is your continual improvement mindset and striving to bring the best you can to your work and customers. Honored to have watched your arc through these short years now and that you have shared it with so many! Thanks Always, Aaron! ~PJ

Hey PJ! I love that when I post a new video I can always expect a thoughtful comment from you, I feel very lucky to have people like yourself that have followed along with my development! The new generation of PVD coatings are really amazing. I am looking forward to developing my specific coatings more as well... One thing I'd really like to try is doing an electroless nickel coating under my DLC coating, that would hugely enhance the corrosion resistance! I am starting to talk to suppliers about that now. As always, thanks for watching PJ! -Aaron
@lordshin738 жыл бұрын
+Gough Custom Aaron your development idea for the electroless nickel coating under the dlc coating sounds supreme. You said you are starting a dialogue with your suppliers about this so I will assume this is still in its inception phase, but do you have any estimation of when a prototype with this type of "supercoating" would be released for testing?
@GoughCustom8 жыл бұрын
+Lord Shin no real idea on timelines yet... I will have to get prototypes coated and then test them, probably a few months at the very earliest.

DLC/IonBond is a wonderful coating as you've shown. I have my barrels done in it and get my internal parts done in it as well for the blacked out guns in my arsenal. It's not a spray on baked coating which some of them are. It's very thin and the properties make the metal look great, picking up fingerprints but then wiping clean time after time again. I love it an will use nothing else.

+Samuel Scott I've got a grizzly 1x30 which is barely better than the harbor freight one. but it comes with a disk sander too. but I finish everything with files because the 1x30 isn't accurate enough for plunge lines and stuff. it's just for stock removal. (at least for me)

I left my DLC 0200 in a backpack that I took hiking. It rained so hard my backpack needed to be emptied when we got back to the car. I forgot that my knife was in the pack, so when I finally found it in there a week later, it was covered in orange. A quick cleaning showed that zero DLC had rusted. It was just a part of the exposed metal on the edge that had gone. Looks brand new after the cleaning. I love DLC

I got two DLC coated knives, the zero tolerance zt 0350 and the zt 0301 tigerstripe. The black zt 0350's DLC coating is very sticky and you can feel a bit of resistance while cuting through several materials ( food, cardboard, wood etc). The coating has a very rough surface that makes this "bad" cuting performance and makes the coating prone to scratches and abrasion. The DLC tigerstripe coating on the zt 0301 is completely different to the 0350. The surface is very smooth and slicky and in many weeks of daily use this kind of DLC shows no signs of abrasion or scratches and the cutting performance is way better than from the zt 0350 although the blades are very similar in geometry (zt 0350 is 10% smaller than the big boy zt 0301). Sorry for the long text.
@GoughCustom8 жыл бұрын
Hey Marco! Yes I know what you mean! I wanted my knives to be matte finished, but I didn't want them to be too grabby... To achieve this I blast them with a mix of aluminum oxide and glass beads before they're DLC coated. This leaves a finish that feels similar to the trackpad on a MacBook, matte but slippery. It seems to work well and is not at all prone to scratching!

That was highly informative as I am considering gettinga watch cerakoted the problem with the testing is it does not measure abrasive resistance, cardboard and wood offer no abrasive response, like one might get from brushing against a wall, door handle branches, etc hope you get my point. That having been said since I am essentially customising a watch for durability ceraokte is probably better than PVD and DLC is an obvious choice but fiscally an expensive option. So i think cost comparisons must be considered when viewing this in context. Great work learnt loads!
@GoughCustom7 жыл бұрын
+Basa 1959 actually cardboard is really quite abrasive you can see this in how the cerakote blades look after the cardboard test. My test didn't cover impact with other metal objects like for handled and such though for sure
@Basman597 жыл бұрын
Cardboard abrasive do me a favour...best laugh I have had in ages. If its cut adn the it is sliced against ytour skin perhaps, but as I was suggesting so you clearly missed the point. It does not scratch itens like branches do or metal objects like door handles hinges etc...So thanks for trying but that reply is fallacious.
@prongATO7 жыл бұрын
You're obviously not able to understand the concept so let's try this; Some sandpaper is 200 grit, thus very abrasive. Other sandpaper is 800 grit, less abrasive but still abrasive. Can you grasp that concept? So cutting and batoning hardwood isn't abrasive but a branch is? You're also trying to compare coating impact resistance to wear resistance. The substrate will ultimately define how strong the coating will be with regards to impact resistance.

good stuff as usual. I was wondering about scratch resistance with these coatings. have you thought about maybe tumbling these with bolts or nails to see metal on metal wear? thanks.

Hey mate! Scratch resistance is actually very good... If you take a nail and drag the pointy end across the coating it will leave a silver mark, but that is actually the metal of the nail rubbing off onto the coating... A little bit of autosol will clean the mark right off and the coating will be pristine, I have done this multiple times!

Great. Can you do a flame torch (red hot) test on the dlc? thermal shock i.e. dipping it into the water when its red hot

I doubt the coating will survive that. The red heat will likely cause the carbon to react with the oxygen in the air and turn to carbon dioxide. The thermal shock is not likely to be an issue though I dont think.

@@GoughCustom thanks but i believe it should not as some of these coatings are done on pistons and valves and there's literally fire inside the engine. I'd appreciate if you could do a test :)

@@rohanpuri1989 Being exposed to high temperatures is not the same as being heated to red hot... Pistons in an engine do not get anywhere close to red hot, because the incoming fuel and air cool them, as does the oil bath underneath the piston and the cooling channels inside the engine block that surround the cylinders... Heating a knife with the coating to red hot would not prove anything, and in fact might give you the idea that the coating is bad when it's not!
