Being of both Polish and Hungarian heritage, I gotta say how much I loved this episode❣️ My Hungarian gramma usually served her guylas over egg noodles or spaetzle but I absolutely LOVE your idea of serving it over potato pancakes❣️

If you have hard bread in Poland (In Sweden it is called Knäckebröd), take a piece of that and put it in your mouth with a bit of it sticking out. You will not cry but maybe you will drool. I translated and you have Knäckebröd. In Poland you call it Chrupiące pieczywo. Thank you for a really nice recipe. I really like the potatopancakes. My family loves potato, in all forms.

Best tip for not letting onions make you cry is to breathe through your mouth only. That way, the irritant doesn't come into contact with the sensitive nasal membrane. (And thanks for another excellent recipe video.)

Just spoke about Hungarian goulash a couple days ago. We always put our goulash on wide egg noodles. Our beef goulash was a bit thicker and darker. Maybe the Hungarian paprika chilies we used made it dark. Haven't made it in years. Looks like goulash on the future dinner table.

How to handle onions so you don't tear up? Put a small fan on your work surface so that it blows across bowl or cutting board. It works.

Thank you for your video. This is very much how I cook potato pancakes. Just last night I came across some guy showing how to cook crispy potato pancakes. They looked awful. He used a larger shredder for the potatoes as they produce a crispier pancake. He added beer, yes beer to the mixture. And he cooked them in a cast iron frypan with lots of oil. Basically he deep fried them and until they were a darkish brown. Yes they were probably crisp but looked horrible. Yours came out just right. I'm not into the goulash though it did look interesting.

The trick with the onion is - don't do it first, do it last and mix it in. You can also add the juice of a quarter lemon. The acid in the onion and/or lemon will actually wash off the brown potato color, no need to cry.

Dzień Dobry! You saying about Polish food being bland. It’s not in the slightest, you should try food from the UK. It’s awful. My boyfriend is Polish, and I adore polish food because of him. We just recently visited poland for my first time. He is from Bydgoszcz. I adore it, we’ve already booked plane tickets to go back for a whole month in the summer and I’m so excited for the food alone ❤ his mum makes goulash with potato pancakes when the kids are at school, and I adore it. It was one of the first meals I tried, and made me fall in love with traditional polish food

Try a "SWEET" onion instead? Like a large SPANISH YELLOW? Maybe NOT so tough for fumes attacking you eyes? Very nice to see your version of what in NYC is generally referred to as "LATKES" (Potato pancakes.). Thanks for the homegrown POLISH ones and the correct vernacular. Poles WERE influenced by Hungary (MAGYARS). Renember that the nation once even elected a HUNGARIAN as it's king... STEFAN BATHORY. By all accounts one of the BEST Poland EVER had too! A "warrior king" who was beloved by his troops for camping out in the field with them and sharing ALL of their hardships. Others usually stayed behind the lines or far off the battle field and brought all the luxuries of their courts with them. This applied to the provincial "MAGNATES" as well from whose ranks Polish kings were usually elected.

With regard to onions and crying, I know, all those anti-crying methods don't work for me, either. I do have to say, though, that I wear glasses, or contact lenses. I find that when I wear my glasses and cut or chop or grate onions, I cry like a baby. While I wear contact lenses though, I do not shed one tear. It has always been that way for me.

Goggles. Literally a swimming/diving mask, preferably that covers your nose. Sounds ridiculous (and looks strange), but that will do the best at keeping the onions from burning your eyes. It will still get in through your mouth, but this is the most effective method.
