Great footage!! Longtails and black throated finches will also use hollows in trees to build nests as well.

Great footage, well done! It's also worth noting an orange headed GF exists, making it the rarest variety. I hope we can see these in the wild for years to come (hands off poachers)

I had incredible luck breeding Lady Gouldians prior to covid. I started with the standard black & red masked and then bred orange/peach masked, solid blue (different shades), solid yellow (called lutino) and two “silvers” (actually all shades of grey.) It’s useful to keep several pair of foster parent finches on hand to rear the first broods as young immature LG’s will often abandon eggs or nestlings until they mature. My foster parent finches would accept eggs & nestlings of any age. I used same-sex male pairs of society finches so they wouldn’t lay their own eggs as they would otherwise do. Once I transferred a large clutch of 8 babies which were abandoned just a couple days before fledging! All but one (which had a deformed leg) survived thanks to the care of the foster parents! Get birds from a reputable breeder to avoid air sac mites (which can be treated with Ivermectin I’m told.)

I keep and breed Gouldian Finches in Thailand. They are lovely birds, with lovely personality and song too! I think the main reason the population is not recovering in Australia is because of the parasitic air sac mites. I have seem many videos of Gouldian Finches in the wild, and there is always an abundance of young birds, but few adults. I think most adults are dying due to the parasite load. Young birds only have a few parasites to start with. I find this with may birds. Its never the young ones that suffer from the mites, it is when they are over a year old. Even with treatment it seems I can never completely eradicate the mites from my flock, but by treating them 2 X each year now none get to the stage that their lives are in danger. The mites have part of the life cycle that can not be killed by the medications. I wonder if the air sac mite was accidently introduced into Australia and that is why the Gouldian Finches seem to have such weak immunity to them? I hope they will evolve to become more resistant to the mites. Another thing may be to establish new captive bread mite free populations of this finch to new areas where they won't come into contacts with the remaining wild birds, OR some scientist work out a cure for the mites to eradicate them from the finches.

Perché questi Gould hanno il verde del dorso di una tonalità diversa quasi cangiante qualcuno lo sa?
@plumesofoz11 ай бұрын
Certainly the diversity of color sets them apart from other finches. Traditionally it is the combination carotenoids (red, yellow), Porphyrins (blue, purple) and their interaction with the different melanin molecules (black-red). But I suspect you raise a good question. It has been found that the parrots have new pigmentation substances. Maybe also the Gouldians!
