Hello. Sorry you lost the two babies. When I had my 20 pairs of Gouldian finches, it was always the male that threw the babies from the nest. Most of my males were good but a couple were bad. A few reasons I found.....wanting to go back to nesting and not raise chicks, disturbing the birds too much or not enough live food like mealworms or provide an insectal mix you can buy online. I provided both. I had the bad males turn good over time in most cases by leaving them alone and only going in bird room to feed them and quickly left to give them privacy. Not checking the nest too much either. This is the same for Cordon Bleus males. I had female Gouldians that would raise the chicks by themselves if you remove the male. I experimented with this and had success. Maybe try it if necessary. I had 4 pairs of societies that raised my Gouldians, owls too, always healthy fat babies. They are great parents. I never had an issue. Mostly, I allowed the Gouldians to raise their own babies which I preferred. I would remove one clutch of Gould eggs and put under the societies. Then the Gouldians will lay another clutch. Doubling your chances. Try the half wicker basket on the Star finches maybe. Did you see the male owl sing yet? That is great they are building a nest. Good luck and looking forward to your next video. Justine

Thank for the tips. I will only use the society finches as last resort

It looks like the hole in your box is very low. Perhaps the nesting material raised the chicks up too close to the bottom of the hole.

i have a couple of owle finich that lay thier first egg but after tow days the throw it out of the nest .... why so ?

I would use coconut fibres as a nesting material. Your birds will build better nest with that and the chicks will not stand out this much. Maybe the light nesting material you use is the reason why the parents toss their chicks out of the nest. Good luck with the second clutch!

They have coconut fibers available but don't take it. Maybe if they laid their eggs I put a thin layer on top of it.

I always start the nest with coconut fibre before I intrduce the box. It helps a lot.

It certainly sounds as if the Gouldian is young and on his learning curve to adulthood. Fostering is always an open debate with Giuldian breeders, half seeing it as a viable solution and half seeing it as a reason why Goulds are losing the parenting instincts over time in captivity. Personally I'm neither here or there in any camp but do know there can be many reasons why chicks get tossed, personally I nest check until the fourth egg is laid and then won't touch or go near the nest until any hatched chicks have fledged, simply counting incubation days etc from the night the hen starts sitting tight over night, this has seen some very successful seasons here with a very very low percentage of chicks not making it with parent raised chicks only. Just my opinion for a bit of balance. Fingers crossed for this next round of chicks 🤞🤞🤞 Best wishes.

I know the debate and will only use it as last resort. But if it keeps on happening I just switch the finches not continue with the society finches

Ik ken iemand die laat de eitjes van de Gould Amadines uitbroeden door Japanse Meeuwen. Het is natuurlijk mooier om het door de ouders te laten doen.

Hello I come from Denmark and have breed goulds the last 7-8 years and i dont have that problem but i think if your adult birds are Born under society finches that can be your problem maybe hope you find the problem

Thanks for the tip, for the male I'm not sure so could be. However, the female was from a friend and I do know she is bred by her real parents :P

Are they this bad in the wild?
@MrAviary3 жыл бұрын
They are, and most often lose from other species.
@shaunbrownlee426711 ай бұрын
Of course not, it's the human interaction that causes this constantly looking in nest boxes and fostering creates birds that can't raise their own young. Gouldians are a beginners bird like a zebra finch
