Gounod : Petite symphonie pour vents (Orchestre philharmonique de Radio France)

L'Orchestre philharmonique de Radio France interprète la Petite symphonie pour vents de Charles Gounod. Enregistré le 27 janvier 2018 à l'Auditorium de la Maison de la Radio (Paris).
Ce n’est que dans les années 1880 que Charles Gounod revient à la symphonie, après trente ans de silence dans ce domaine - ses Première et Deuxième symphonies sont respectivement créées en 1855 et 1856.
Mais cette fois-ci, le compositeur français prend le contre-pied de ce qui se fait et opte pour un effectif réduit à neuf instrumentistes. « Voyant croître l’ambition et les effectifs de la symphonie, il répondit par une quasi-sérénade prémonitoire de l’esprit des années 1920 (Poulenc, Stravinsky) : la Petite Symphonie pour vents », précise Gérard Condé.
L’œuvre est créée le 30 avril 1885 dans l’ancienne Salle Pleyel par son dédicataire, le flûtiste Paul Taffanel et sa Société française de musique de chambre pour instruments à vent. Suivant la forme traditionnelle de la symphonie, elle débute par une lente introduction immédiatement suivie d’un Allegretto. L’Andante cantabile où le thème passe successivement de la flûte au hautbois puis à la clarinette se veut doux et serein. Le Scherzo adopte quant à lui « les couleurs de la chasse » et son Trio celles de la « danse pastorale ». Enfin, l’œuvre s’achève par Allegretto animé.

Amazing performance from greatest soloists. Interesting to see, the bassonists, one plays the german fagott and the second one the french bassoon , especialy when you know the competition in France between both style. Olivier Doise (oboe 1) is perfect and as usual very inspired

Gounod was a very conservative composer, but he had a great melodic insipiration and a true sense of the orchestral colors. This littel symphony is a modest litttle thing, but a ravishing thing.

Wunderschöne Aufführung dieser fein komponierten Blassinfonie im gut phrasierten Tempo mit milden Tönen aller Blasinstrumente und mit perfekt vereinigter Dynamik. Der zweite Satz klingt besonders schön und echt lyrisch. Die intime und perfekt balancierte Miteinanderwirkung zwischen den neun Virtuosen ist wahrlich bewundernswert. Einfach wunderbar!

Très belle interprétation/exécution. Juste un regret pour le mouvement 3, où l'allegro moderato de Gounod est devenu un allegro furioso; comme dans beaucoup d'autre interprétation hélas aussi...

Oui vrai, en fait il n'y a aucun ''Allegro'' dans l'oeuvre, que des ''Allegretto'' Mais le 3è avec l'indication Scherzo nous invite à pousser un peu le tempo non? Ces questions de tempo sont toujours un casse tête quand il n'y a pas d'indication métronomique, mais il faut aussi prendre en compte le contenu du mouvement en valeurs, la plus petite étant la croche, qui en modérant va vite perdre son caractère Scherzo ...Je trouve leur interprétation très convaincante, ce sont des virtuoses accomplis qui soutiennent admirablement leur choix!

Yes, the first and last sections of the scherzo are pushed a little, but the players relax the tempo a bit in the middle. On this shores (USA) a common definition of "too fast" is when you can't get all the notes correctly. Greetings, fellow music lovers!

Ok Gounod - is the damn piece for 9, or for 8? Make up your mind!! (Classical composers are often their own brand of evil thanks to Satan.) Anyway - back to my chastizment. Finally - movement 3, Oboe 2 GETS TO F-ING PLAY SOMETHING!!; MORE SIGNIFICANT THAN JUST THE ALTERNATIVE OF STANDING THERE. I know you're dead Gounod, but THINK! you can give that player more, if you just Will!! Idiot! And to the players here. You're outstanding. No question. Thanks flute player for not "taking over"!! Thanks to EACH of you for playing as an ENSEMBLE rather than as soloists playing together! Y'all should expand that quintet version of Jupiter and play it. Also you should arrange & play that version of... (Let me find it, and then post)... floydglenn I don’t think there’s really a need to get so fired up over this wow.. this is a beautiful piece and he had reasons for the things you complain about- He wrote the piece largely dedicated to his friend who was a flute player. He took a woodwind quintet and doubled it, but only had one flute as a sort of tribute/honor to his friend. And the second oboe thing, I’ve heard that his wife cheated on him with a second oboist so he was pretty bitter and stingy with the part which I think is kind of amusing
