It allows lawfare to be launched against political opponents so if you are not rich, like Sarah Palin, you cannot afford to stay in the game because of all the frivolous lawsuits they have to pay to defend. It also causes most politicians to be lawyers, but no other country is run by lawyers, only the USA. Elected officials in other countries usually have scientific medical or business backgrounds. @Jim Ferrante the idea of Sheriffs came from England, really. In England a county was referred to as a shire. States adopted their own sheriffs, by county, also giving them posse comitatus powers to create state militias. It was all in keeping with the second amendment and adopted from mostly King Alfred’s creation of the sheriff. It’s very interesting stuff and there are some terrific research papers online to look at and see how we morphed England’s sheriffs into our own that exist in almost all 50 states. Today, American sheriffs are elected in all states except Alaska (which has no counties), Hawaii, Rhode Island, and Connecticut (where the office of sheriff was abolished in 2000). 🙂
