GOVEE RGBIC CURTAIN LIGHT (EP.90)

This is a fun one. Come on a journey with me to check out a pretty cool curtain light from Govee!
I'm continuing to dive into more features and I think I've cracked the code on using images for a low-cost image based lighting (IBL), solution. Stay tuned for that!
BTW, the curtain is also IP65 rated so you can used it outdoors if you protect the plug and power controller.

The LEDs are very small and not very bright in terms of output. You have to back them away to not see them, even behind magic cloth. Trust me, I tried. Also, the lack of white diodes and Kelvin temperature settings makes it more of an effects light.

I was thinking magic cloth too. Thanks for testing this. On a different matter, a few months ago I went to a demo of the new Kinoflo Mimik system. First thought I had was, ok cool, now make it lighter, less expensive and easily used on location. This "cheap light" makes me feel we'll get there pretty soon.@@theC47

This curtain light could be useful as a off camera side light in a low cost XR volume. Side light in an XR volume is used to make reflected (indirect?) lighting that shines on the actors. Can you load a very low resolution animated GIF or actual video to the curtain?

I originally thought it might be a very inexpensive solution for Image Based Lighting (IBL), so we are on the same wavelength. I keep updating this reply as I am starting to figure it out now so it might wind up being a future episode. Hopefully in the next couple of weeks. The Govee curtain won't have the color spectrum that Quasar and Kino Flo solutions have, as it's only RGB on each chip, but I'll try to figure it out so it can be looked at a low cost option for IBL. Stay tuned!

@@theC47 Two weeks ago at the Lighting Design International (LDI) conference Chauvet was showing a IBL specific light. It was based on one of their 2x4 rigid light panels with an external control unit that you could feed any resolution video into. It would display it on the screen. The resolution was low. Maybe 100x200 pixels. It is an interesting product. I did not ask about price. I expect to see similar products from other vendors next year at LDI.
