I'm a gringo who's 44 years old I just returned from two years in Colombia and I absolutely loved it. I never had one problem I actually never even felt unsafe not once I did I feel unsafe. I was dating a girl who lived on Santo Domingo I would go up there 4 nights a week people would warm me about going there and I was thinking to myself I don't think they will kill me for no reason I never had a problem I actually made good friends up there and I loved to see how it is for people living in the mountains. Medellin is fantastic and all of Colombia is incredible. I loved it so much that I recently returned to the USA now I'm making plans on selling my house and living in Colombia forever. Life in general as a human being is better than the USA. I should be back in Colombia in the next 12 months. My words to who ever reads this comment visit Colombia you will not regret it. It's truly a fascinating county with the great woman and the nice people I've ever met. They all proved to me that you don't need money to make you happy.

Drug money is still money, the cartels bought off positions in the government ages ago, and use their influence to keep these private armies active and acting with impunity, and if anyone asks, the people they're massacring are "criminals". They actually kill farmers and nosey human rights activists the most, so they can expand their coca leaf and marijuana crops. When they clash with the "leftist" (another farytale) guerrillas, it's jut usually over control of these crops, not to erradicate them, but to profit from them. Basically the civil war in Colombia is just a bunch of people fighting over control of the land, some have friends in the senate/chamber/local govs, some not, some want the land for drug production,some for control over resources, some want it to sell it of to foreign corporations (fun fact: did you know that the coca-cola company has financed left-wing guerrillas in Colombia? it's not because they're into communism, it's because they payed them to kill/displace people around a water source they were interested in for a bottling plant).
