Government Issue - The Fun Just Never Ends - LP
After initially starting out as a fast-paced hardcore band called The Stab, from which lead singer John Schroeder derived his pseudonym John Stabb, Stabb and drummer Marc Alberstadt recruited guitarist John Barry and bassist Brian Gay and changed the band's name to Government Issue.
After going through some line-up changes, whilst releasing a couple of EPs, and their debut LP, Boycott Stabb, from '81 until '83, Government Issue started slowing it down a bit and evolving their sound, and they weren't afraid to follow their own path even if it meant alienating their previous fans.
They recorded in CBGBs and released this LP, in 1985, on Fountain Of Youth Records. The line-up on this record was; John Stabb - vocals, Marc Alberstadt - drums, Tom Lyle - guitar, as well as newcomer Lenny Leonard - on bass.

I had the immense pleasure of housing GI for a night when they had no where to stay after a gig. Really nice guys, so warm and friendly and really curious about how I got into them not being a yank. They asked me which was my favourite GI album and this one was my answer. They asked why…..”it’s the riffs” was my answer. Great band and great guitarist in Tom….RIP Stabb.

Overall I'd probably rate it my least favorite, but they're all terrific so that's not to say that I don't like it. It's just kind of that awkward adolescent phase of the band as they first really started becoming more melodic while still having a lot of early HC trappings. They'd learn how to mesh it all into something wonderful on subsequent LP's. As for the early stuff, it's all classic HC so what's not to love? But this is great too, a real document of what first wave HC musicians pushing the boundaries. The mid 80s were a very interesting time for punk, lots of experimentation, lots of interesting failures (at least folks were trying) and totally new sounds.
