Great tutorial. It helped me understand ESXi networking, thanks! I come from the HyperV side so it took a while to wrap my head around the new terminology and concepts. The answer to question 2) is yes, but only if PG1 and PG2 are on the same VLAN, correct?
@govmlab
@govmlab 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks @Eric Glad to hear that you find our lectures useful🙏 Yes, that correct. If vm1 & vm2 connected to different pg but part of same VLAN, they should be able to communicate. But if both the vms are part of two different in VLAN then packet has to traverse through physical network and routing will happen at physical network level. But this problem is also very well solved in VMware NSX using logical routing where routing happens in ESXi kernel itself and packet doesn't need to traverse through physical network just to get routed. I hope it clarifies your doubt!! Keep Sharing...Keep Learning👍

nice video, not sure if I missed it...same host same virtual switch, 2 virtual machines on 2 different port groups and the port groups on different vlans....do they communicate through the vswitch or just like 2 vlans on a physical switch do they need a layer 3 (physical router or l3 switch) thus needing to go out a vmnic and back to talk?
@govmlab
@govmlab Жыл бұрын
Hi If 2 VMs are connected to 2 different port group configured with 2 different VLANs. Then it has to be Layer3 communication. VMware vSwitch only provides Layer2 capabilities. So yes, Router has to be in place to route the traffic from VLAN1 to VLAN2. it has to be taken care by Physical Networking. we hope it clarifies your doubt.
@vivekgupta9681
@vivekgupta9681 3 жыл бұрын
Great explanation Sir !!! Just i have doubt over few things :- 1. when we see the settings >> networking >> default TCP/IP stack>> it has default gateway in it ? so is there any component that acts like a L3 switch or agteway? 2. Aslo wanted to know, like you said VM's are commuicated using frames, so why do we assign IP's on VM's, the MAC address should be enough right ? 3. if we have Port groups to defiing policies, as it acts like VLAN, so why we need to associate different vlan s with vswitches?

You said that VMs attached to two different vSwitches cannot communicate if there is no uplink. That is true for Layer 2 only. You could create a router-VM on an ESXi host with two virtual adapters (one belonging to each vSwitch). Traffic could then be routed between the vSwitches without an uplink.
@govmlab
@govmlab 2 жыл бұрын
Hi jmgch, What you said is correct but in this lecture, we are actually focusing on native Layer2 forwarding capabilities provided by vSphere Networking. VMware vSphere Networking only provide Layer2 capabilities but with introduction of NSX, it natively provides L3 and other capabilities as well without deploying any 3rd part product or appliance.

So maybe dumb question.. Let's say I have 2 hosts I will use to create a cluster. I will plug both to two physical switches for redundancy. How many IPs do I need to reserve?? 1 management IP for each ESXi host and that's it? Or do vMotion needs it's own too? (Then of course each VM will have its own, but I need to understand the physical connections and IP requirements) Thanks!
@govmlab
@govmlab 2 жыл бұрын
Hi @Ing Adrian, If i understood your question correctly, it's about How To Provide redundancy to Management Network, VM Network and vMotion Network. In VMware Networking, Redundancy to these network traffic is provided by configuring NIC Teaming feature where we connect multiple uplinks to same vSwitch. All Physical Uplinks can be connected to different switch for providing redundancy at Physical Switch Level as well. Regarding IP reservation, It's recommended to assign Static IP to ESXi Host, vCenter Server and Other Infra Appliances. I hope it clarifies your doubt!!
@_c0mrad3_
@_c0mrad3_ 14 күн бұрын
For VMs in different hosts, does it need the VM in each host to be a member of a PG for them to communicate with each other?, or you just need an uplink per host’s vSwitch?
@govmlab
@govmlab 9 күн бұрын
@c0mrad3 Each VM should be connected to a Portgroup irrespective of whether VMs resides on same ESXi or different ESXi Host. We didn't understand your comment about uplink per host vSwitch. If traffic has to leave ESXi host then it always requires uplink. Without Uplink connectivity, How Traffic leaves the source ESXi host and enters into Destination ESXi host. We hope it clarify your doubts.

@@govmlab sorry for the confusion. In short how can VMs from different hosts talk to each other using vSS? Tried to add PGs in different hosts, configured VMs to use it, added uplink but they can’t still ping each other. Hope this make sense. Thank you!

Hi vSphere Networking only provides Layer2 switching capabilities only. If you have 2 VMs connected to 2 different port group configured with 2 different VLAN ( two IP subnets). In that case, communication will not work because vSphere Networking doesn't provide routing capabilities. NSX provides such routing capabilities in Hypervisor itself. Where 2 VMs connected to different network can communicate with each other without leaving ESXi host. That's called Logical Routing in NSX. Just to conclude, vSphere Networking only provide Layer2 Switching capabilities. We hope it clarifies your doubts. Feel free to reach out to us if you have any further query. Hi vSphere Networking only provides Layer2 Switching capabilities. It means that if 2 VMs are connected to 2 different Port groups configured with 2 VLAN ( 2 IP Subnets), You would require physical router to be placed in external network to enable communication between these VMs. vSphere Standard/Distributed Switch doesn't allow communication between VMs configured with 2 different VLANs or IP Subnets. In NSX, it is supported because ESXi Hypervisor has routing capabilities, and it can allow communication between 2 VMs configured with 2 IP subnets. This NSX capability is called Logical Routing. ESXi provides logical routing in Hypervisor itself. Just to conclude, vSphere Networking only provides Layer2 Switching capabilities. For L3 networking, you might have to use NSX implementation. We hope it clarifies your doubt. Keep Sharing and Enjoy Learning VMware with GOVMLAB!!

can I use a single virtual switch to connect those individual switches to connect VMs
@govmlab
@govmlab Ай бұрын
@shubham Sorry but your question is not clear to us. Just to answer your query, cascading of virtual switches is not supported in VMware. You can't connect multiple individual switches to single common switch. Feel free to reach out to us if you want to understand vSphere Networking more in depth.

I have port-channel with 4four interfaces (each 1Gbps) virtual switch. but in VM, speed network adapter is just 1Gb, can i fix it to up 4Gb?

@govmlab 4 ай бұрын
Hi We hope you have deeper understanding of vSphere Networking Concepts. We don't configure Port Channel kind of stuffs at VM level. We already one of the best Network adapter for VM traffic provided by VMware as vmxnet3 adapter. We are still not sure what do you want to achieve by creating port channel at VM level. What's the requirement to do this and what benefit are you trying to get with such configuration? If you try finding out the answer of these questions, you will understand why VMware doesn't support doing port channeling at vNIC level because it doesn't make sense in Virtual World. If you still have doubts then feel free to reach out to us on WhatsApp no. +917083939150 for VMware related queries.

Hi, Im configuring a zabbix server in a Linux CentOs8 that is running on a Vmware. This virtual machine is running on a server that has 3 physicals Adapters. Each physical adapter has it own IP segment like bellow: Adpt1 10.188.127.250/24 Adpt2 10.188.160.250/24 Adpt3 10.188.130.250/20 The virtual machine has IP like bellow: ens160 10.188.127.251/24 ens161 10.188.160.251/24 ens254 10.188.130.251/20 Problem: Just Adpt1 and ens160 is working. If I change the IP segment of ens160 to the others segment it works. But I need each adapter communicate separately. In VMware settings all adapter were created and marked as bridge. Please help I'm using the VMware Workstation 16
