@Emi I was verbally abused by an old HK lady when I studied in Australia. What she said sounded very racist although we are asian if not Chinese. My HK landlord simply did not want to have anything to do with me expect for collecting the rent monthly. I can't say all HK people are rude to mainlanders because I did meet some nice guys who were willing to help at any time. To my big suprise, Taiwanese people turned out to be very compatible with mainland Chinese. HK people should abserve and approach people without involving politics and stereotypes. I am trying not to generize people wherever I go. We need people like you.

Cuba once was treated like this before as well, the main reason is because Cuba is not following US government policy. What a lame. Sorry. The victims are definitely innocent people who knows nothing about US government scheme and many were brainwashed until they went to Cuba themselves, then they realize it is not like the US media says about Cuba. Now China.

Totally agree with you but I preferred Beijing lol. I lived in China for 15 years and loved every minute of it. I hope to visit again as soon as China opens up after this pandemic is over. I read on another vlog that you can walk on the sidewalks in some US cities carrying a gun, but you can't have an open container of beer! How nuts in that when I think of the innumerable time I walked around Beijing enjoying a cold one without any fear for my safety!

I have been to China. I have met a few rude people, but that is expected no matter where you go. There are bullies in China, I've seen a couple (also helps that I can speak the language). I did not experience any robberies, but I was pick pocketed, so there is crime. Racists: Well, there are prejudices, especially to those who do not speak Mandarin (I speak Cantonese primarily, but am able to speak Mandarin). If a person does not speak Mandarin, but speak another dialect, to some, you are not considered "real" Chinese. One of my Chinese friends had told me that Mandarin from Taiwan is not real Chinese. They don't speak real Chinese. Go figure. As for drugs, it depends on where you are. Jackie Chan's son was charged for drug possession. You have to know where to look. As a whole, most of the people are good. I found it wasn't as bad at night, but I still was on the cautious side. It was probably due to being brought up to be aware of my surroundings because anything can happen in an instant.

Fortunately the truth is more nuanced , if you go to China to create mayhem , start an insurrection against the government and create riots and general disorder or rumour monger then yes the Chinese government will drop on you very hard , if your intention is to sight see , enjoy Chinese rich culture , live a decent ordinary life then the Chinese government will not even bother you they have better things to do than bother ordinary people like making sure the country runs smoothly for the majority....

There's another reason that people often take for granted and can't see it through without some serious brainstorming: Hope. Hope makes living in China much much more attractive. See, we humans live on hope, which makes life so much easier and frankly so much happier as a result. Since China is one of the very few, if not the only, major countries that advance in leaps and bounds, most people living in China have hopes , realisticly believing that tomorrow will be even better than today. In the streets you constantly witness that hope by the sheer energy and speed of the society advancement, BIG smiles (literally) in in so many faces, and optimistic spirits from all walks of life 24X7, every day, and every year... This is not so in many other countries, even in Europe, where uncertainty about tomorrow or the day after tomorrow is almost always in the air for many people. This makes life more dulling, more tendency towards violence, and sometimes less bearable.

If you can't provide your fellow men/women real hope, give them fake hope. 1967 When the US was loosing VN war, 4-star gen. William Westmoreland: "We can see the light at the tunnel now". Few months later, when the US embassy in Saigon was infiltrated & under brutal attack, Walter Cronkite: "We were told that we've won the war" on CBS News. Early April, Covid 19 blew up in USA, Trump tweeted again: Light at the end of the tunnel. then US recorded 3,331 deaths and 81,740 cases when Trump light shinned at the tunnel. Now 10th Sept, the total death was 191,000 & 6.38 Million total case Is the light still shinning at the end of the tunnel.

China looks like a fascinating country. I agree that people are such an important part of our experience in places. Sounds much more convenient than my house. I'm so in the middle of nowhere that not a single restaurant does Deliveroo (or similar service) to my door. I have to go out and collect takeaways! I can't get past how diverse the Chinese landscape is. No way do I think of grasslands in China. It really does have a lot to offer. I think Chinese food looks amazing. I am absolutely dying to try traditional Chinese food.

It is a fascinating country, on so many levels. That doesn't sound too fun, having to go out and get takeaway. That takes away of the convenience. Top 2 pros of China are convenient and safety. When I went to China, I realized it was unhealthy to have to worried about safety issues in the States at night. In China, I didn't need to stay alert and it was so common for people to hangout at night in parks. There were many activities going on at night apart from drinking and parties. Online shopping could be delivered the same day. No extra membership fee like Amazon Prime, which still takes 2-3 days to deliver in most cities. And the delivery fees for restaurants are nothing in China, compared to a fixed fee plus 15% tips. Of course I'm willing to pay more to delivery guys.

I really like your list! I have lived in Beijing for almost 3 years and I am I glad I picked it over Shanghai and Hong Kong. The convenience is definitely something unique, especially since that convenience does not come at a cost, like in the west. And I love the public bikes! Cost of living in Beijing is much lower than you'd expect from a major city, which makes paying that higher rent a bit of a shock. From what I've seen, the rents are on par with those in EU capital - Brussels, Belgium- and the quality is almost as bad. If you move outside the city, you can find amazingly cheap apartments that are sparkling and brand new, but then you are subjected to a time-draining daily commute to work in the city. Food, culture, language, and travel are my top 4 reasons, so we practically agree there. Great list, Yvon. Keep up the great work!

The Chinese way of life seems different, when I was there I ate in a cafeteria often and ate street food. The travel interesting but things are even more modern now. In Dalian, where I lived 2009, the city was modern but less modern than Beijing. The housing was abundant and improving. The people were helpful and less outgoing than now. Biking was difficult although was possible. The trains were slower and people were flying a lot. The beaches were crowded but the parks were easily accessed and comfortable. The sights there are unique and the experience incredible. Lots of food in the shops could be found at good prices. Your life in the city seems more distinctive than life in smaller cities. Ten years is a long to spend in the country. I spent seven months there. I know Holland., I have family there. You must like living in China to live there so long.
